The first episode of Netflix's mystery thriller limited series Below introduced use to the world of Snook's Arm and the mythology surrounding the sea creature that's been seemingly haunting the island for decades. In the episode's end, Wade came face to face with the same creature his father did as a child and was left terrified with half of Jerry's dead body.
Below episode 2 begins underwater as a diver searches for Jerry's boat alongside a full team out on the water. Seeing pieces of his boat floating in the water gives Calvin flashbacks to his house sinking with his father inside. An ongoing investigation doesn't look great for Calvin's family, but he supposes the running theory about a chunk of ice causing this damage isn't explanation enough.
When Calvin opens his net from his boat, he discovers the head of a moose. Back at home, Wade draws the strange circular entity he saw in the water. When he finally emerges from his room, he chugs most of a gallon of water, causing concern for Jay, Mary, and Noah. He's in a daze and goes right to bed. Fonda continues to test on the ice as her coworker displays odd behavior.
Wade has marks on his back after his strange encounter
Down at a dock, a man feeds four circular nets full of fish in the water when he notices each circle rush with motion. Soon, something tears one of the nets underwater and swims away before swimming back in the direction of the dock and knocking the man into the water. He's trapped underwater in the center of a swarm of fish.
Mary argues with Jay about what will happen to their father in the event that the community votes yes on the resettlement. He interrupts their conversation and checks on Wade. Unfortunately, Wade didn't realize that Jerry had died and Calvin breaks the news. Wade explains what they were doing on the water, but he doesn't remember what happened after it flipped.
He's certain the ice didn't have anything to do with it, but Calvin worries that Wade's account of the event could be tainted by the psilocybin and alcohol in his system at the time. Regardless, Wade promises not to be a burden on his father. That's when Calvin notices a mysterious circle of what looks like bite marks on Wade's back. Calvin rushes to talk to Fonda.
Calvin shows her the picture of the marks on Wade's back, which she doesn't recognize. She shows him drawings in a book of architeuthis dux, which means giant squid. Calvin doesn't believe a squid could be involved because they typically hide. But Fonda doesn't believe that his father went down by chance and that other occurrences around the bay also have a different explanation.
Fonda has a working theory based on the locations of unexplained fish losses, and Calvin plans to reach out to Pittman's to compare notes. Meanwhile, Ruth continues to be under pressure both on the investigation about Jerry and regarding the resettlement vote. Noah digs around in his backpack and pulls out a ring box, seemingly suggesting he's planning to propose to Mary.
More shocking deaths add to the mystery
Calvin and Fonda pay a visit to Pittman's together, and unfortunately, this happens to be the dock of the man who was taken underwater while feeding fish. (Guess he's dead?) They find his shed empty and a tent in the distance. Back at home, Wade awakens from a dream in which he was walking naked down a dock, following a creepy woman who was sitting at the top of the iceberg.
He falls to the ground and looks under his bed, seeing dirty, possibly bloody feet walking toward him. The woman from his dream climbs onto the bed at looks at him on the floor. Jay rushes into the room when he hears Wade making noises and wakes his brother from the dream he was possibly still having. He explains his dream, which felt real to him, to Jay.
Jay tells his brother that he's had the dream of the "hag" before due to stress and offers his brother a place to stay out West if he ever wants to get away from home. Once Jay leaves the room, Wade looks at the end of the bed and sees wet marks where the woman walked. Calvin and Fonda venture to the campsite and he identifies the gear as his Airbnb guests. They also find body parts.
Calvin and Fonda make an unexpected discovery
Unfortunately, Jay keeps receiving threatening text messages, but he also gets a selfie from Jan and an inquiry about the garden party. He leaves Wade home alone to attends the party, but on the way, Jay is jumped and beaten by the men he owes money. He promises to give them $60k from the government payout for the resettlement, should his dad end up agreeing.
Calvin and Fonda watch footage of the campsite and watch the man argue with a moose. But the moose was grabbed by something with a long tentacle from the water followed by the man. Noah heads down to the beach to gather more ice for the party and the water on the shore is stirring. Thankfully, he makes it back to keep serving snow cones. But he's anxious about proposing.
Noah realizes that he lost the engagement ring, but there's no time to panic. Calvin rushes into the garden party and warns everyone to get away from the water. He's looked at with concern. While the Portuguese nationals are presumed dead and the search is called off, but the ending cuts to the man who lost his leg still very much being alive and seemingly torture by someone barefoot.
