After two episodes, Below has already started to untangle the nautical mystery that's unfolding in Newfoundland, but we're still so far from learning the truth. As Wade was left reeling from his encounter on the boat that killed Jerry, Calvin and Fonda made a shocking discovery about the sea creature wreaking havoc on their community. But there's much more to discover.
Below episode 3 picks up with Wade kayaking up to the iceberg and marveling at its size before paddling toward a large oncoming ship as a man named Steve (David Wenham) checks on him. During a town meeting, Fonda speaks to the crowd about the unusual activities that could be related. She believes a giant squid could be terrorizing their town. They don't believer her.
Calvin intervenes to defend Fonda and help make everyone believe what she's telling them. Sadly, his intervention doesn't exactly help matters and only stirs more chaos. Meanwhile, Wade climbs aboard Steve's boat and wears a foil blanket. He explains to Steve what happened to him and Jerry and shows him the marks on his back. Steve notes all of Wade's symptoms one by one.

Calvin tries to take matters in his own hands
According to Steve, his colleague has a theory regarding an undetected species of cephalopod with an unusual defense mechanism—a gelatinous secretion with an effect similar to chronic wasting syndrome in mammals. Before long, Wade has a new job aboard Steve's ship. Meanwhile, Calvin takes matters into his own hands and arms himself before speeding away.
Noah attempts to find a flight home out of fear of the giant squid. (Well, they at least have one believer.) When he asks whether Jay has seen his ring, he claims that he hasn't. But it's a safe guess that Jay stole the ring to pay off his debt. Mary tries to talk her dad out of heading into the water and even threatens to join him on the boat. Neither of her methods work.
Before he can start his boat, Calvin notices his engine coil is missing, which Ruth clearly stole. He's fighting to finish what the sea creature started when he lost his dad as a kid, but no one wants him to get killed in the process. Ruth finally reveals that the vote isn't in their favor. Now Calvin's even more fired up, especially after spotting Wade on Steve's boat.
Mary and Ruth have beers after thwarting Calvin's escape, and Mary reveals that Jay is sleeping with Jan. Calvin finds his way onto Steve's boat to bring Wade home, but he learns that his son has taken a job and that Steve's a "conservationists" for squid. Calvin warns them against the dangers, but he offers himself up in exchange for Wade. Obviously, Wade is angry at his dad.
Jay pays a visit to Jan and brings up the topic of the $60k of resettlement money that could help him out of his jam. She agrees to put his name on the list and look the other way before they kiss. Fonda's on the shore and tries to stop Dr. Sayed, one of Steve's men, from interfering with the iceberg. He takes a sample from it and paddles his canoe over to her at the shore.
The sea creature is a bigger threat than they realize
Fonda accompanies Dr. Sayed on his ship to talk about her theories. He reveals that the species they're dealing with is much older and more dangerous than she had supposed. Sayed explains that the creatures natural habitat is deep in the arctic, but with it breaking apart, she roams and drifts with the Labrador Current. He theorizes the creature uses the ice to mark her territory.
After Sayed tells Fonda a story about sailors who encountered a similarly toxic kraken years past, she receives an alert that the ocean center has a breach and is in lockdown. Once again, Wade crashes out when he ATV breaks down. On his way to the bar, Noah spots some weird behaviors, including a young boy drinking from a hose. Wade drinks from the sink and strips down when he gets home.
As we know, excessive thirst is a symptom of being intoxicated by the secretions. Calvin and Ruth clear the air, and Jay attempts to do the same with the men he owes money to, but they start another fight. Calvin rushes outside to get the men off his son and stop the fight. Jay admits to Calvin that he owes them $80k, and Calvin realizes he in favor of the resettlement because of this.
Wade has another hallucination of the hag crawling on top of his body in bed, but he's surprised that she's a younger woman who engages sexual activity. Calvin realizes Steve left the bar and rushes home to find nothing but a large sweat stain in Wade's bed. Fonda returns to the science center, which is in utter disarray.
Everyone at the bar appears to be contaminated with the ice. The more they drink, they more disoriented they become. Calvin steals a small boat and races out into the water to track down Wade and Steve. Fonda finds Barry demanding water as he repeatedly smashes his face into the window leading to the ocean.
