We have officially reached the halfway point of Below, and the stakes have only gotten higher for Calvin, his family, and his community. The prospect of the resettlement going through picks up steam just as Fonda's latest revelations about the sea creature reveal that it's much more dangerous than they had realized. But Calvin and Wade's new "friends" might be the next threat.
Below episode 4 begins where we left off with Calvin in episode 3, as he races toward Steve's ship in the ocean in search of Wade. After rummaging around, Calvin confronts Steve, who informs him that Wade isn't on board and Ruth sent them away with a threat to impound their ship. Unfortunately, the boat Calvin stole to get to Steve's ship was stolen. They all watch as it's taken under.
Calvin demands that they steer toward the squid and kill it after witnessing its latest kill. But their captain and first mate were the ones killed. With no one else able to drive the ship, Calvin offers to get them there. Calvin isn't satisfied when he realizes that not only do they intend to research rather than kill the squid, but they don't even have a working radio to call out to the Coast Guard.
An outbreak takes over Snook's Arm thanks to the ice
Fonda drives into town and stops when she finds a man drinking water directly from a puddle in the road. She puts him in her truck and heads to the community center. There's officially an outbreak thanks to the contaminated ice and those suffering are set up on cots and given bottled water. Mary asks Fonda if she's heard from her dad, but no one has heard from Calvin since the night before.
Ruth, who's also infected, calls the Coast Guard for assistance, but in the middle of speaking to the person on the other end, she walks out to the dock to the water. Fonda catches her before she jumps in and takes her away. The crew aboard Steve's ship braces from the creatures impact, but they can't catch it with the harpoon before she sneaks under the ship.
Dr. Sayed takes his latest shot while hanging overboard. He finally gets the shot as the squid has its tentacles wrapped around the ship. They celebrate tagging the squid, but Calvin worries that they're taking on water and losing fuel. Calvin can't believe that they're planning on diving into the water to get footage of the squid. It's all in the name of money and glory.
Calvin's warned to check Steve's quarters before the dive is set to take off. The conditions at the community center aren't improving as the patients continue to mentally decline. Noah, worried that he might not make it, gives Mary the empty ring box and reveals his intention to propose. Even without a ring, Mary accepts his proposal.
Calvin comes face to face with the sea creature
Unfortunately, the team at the community center aren't able to stop Barry from diving into the ocean. As he was told to do, Calvin pokes around Steve's quarters and finds the hidden box with a working radio. Before he can effectively send out a signal, Steve catches him and points a gun at him. Now, Calvin's on the line to join the team going into the sea in the submarine.
Before long, they're descending underwater and Calvin panics the deeper they go. Now on the sea floor, Steve and Sayed shine lights to draw in the creature. She's right above them, but based on the footage, they can't see her. Suddenly, they watch a tentacle fall onto the seafloor. The squid apparently chewed off her own arm as a signal that she knows they are tracking her.
Because the tentacle with the tracker has been removed, they don't know where the creature is anymore. All they can do is wait in fear. Calvin looks out the window as the creature grabs onto the submarine and twists it around and around. Just like 40 years ago, Calvin is face to face with the squid's eye. Calvin yells at them to "fry her," but Steven and Sayed disagree.
They think the creature likes Calvin and that she's just playing with them. But they are now rocketed upward toward the surface and the hatch threatens to open as they rise. Steve and Sayed have a struggle, which leads to Sayed grabbing Steve's gun and killing him. Calvin releases the handle of the hatch and the pressure opens it, sending both him and Sayed into the ocean. Back on shore, Jan hears Calvin's SOS but pours water on the radio. Thankfully, Calvin washes ashore alive.
