The penultimate episode of Below has arrived, and we're on the precipice of getting the answers to all of our questions. In the previous episode, the series blew all of our expectations out of the water, almost literally, as Calvin found himself in a submarine that's apprehended by the sea creature and blown open. In the episode's end, Calvin washed ashore, seemingly in a new territory.

Below episode 5 begins with Calvin waking up and struggling to wake as he makes his way through an unfamiliar house. But it's not so unfamiliar as it appears to be a house he spent time in as Ruth's name is on a doorframe. He walks outside of the house, which is perched on a hillside island. Calvin spots the hag in the distance and then a man with a mask before he runs into Wade with relief.

Wade takes his dad back into the house and explains that the "hag" is named Maggie, and she lives in the house. The man wearing the mask enters the house and removes his mask. Calvin recognizes him as Walton. Back in Snook's Arm, the outbreak appears to be finally settling down and the blackout has lifted, but tensions are still high with Calvin missing and the Coast Guard out of reach.

Who is Mudder?

Fonda, Mary, and Ruth head to the science center to use Fonda's radio and save her samples, and Jay's thwarted by a flat tire and the men he owes money to on his way to get gas for the generator. Walton helps Calvin walk off his bends and they catch up about the past and present. It seems they hid away from the resettlement on this island. Walton's dad built a contraption for "Mudder."

Walton takes Calvin to their makeshift cemetery, which includes a plot for his father. They found enough of his body to give him a proper burial. Calvin still blames himself for his father's death, but Walton helps to ease his guilt. Maggie laces a joint with something from "Mudder" and gets Wade on high on it as well as her promises that they can stay together forever. Something weird is going on.

While Jay's car ride takes an unexpected detour, Fonda arrives with Mary and Ruth at the science center. Ruth tries to make contact with the radio as Fonda ventures into the basement to check on her samples. Unfortunately, they appear to be ruined. Ruth finally makes contact and quickly learns that there were no reported survivors from the Sir John Franklin. Mary immediately panics.

Ruth still has hope that Calvin could be alive, but the message they received doesn't sound so hopeful. Jay gets held at gunpoint in the car, creating a struggle that ends with the back window being shot and the car racing through the woods into the water. The sea creature swims up to the car and grabs it. Jay thinks on his feet and rushes out the back window to escape.

He helps one of the men escape but the other gets eaten along with the car by the creature. Meanwhile, Calvin tries to talk Walton out of going out on the water that night. Once again, he finds himself out on the sea and right in danger. He smokes from Walton's pipe, which calms him down. They drop the device into the water and the squid provides them with a bounty of fish.

Calvin learns the truth and plots his escape

Calvin learns that Mudder, which is what they call the giant squid, has been working with the small group on this island. It's a strange arrangement that they have. Jay plans to become free of his debts by spinning a story that he came up with the money but Connor, the man who was taken by the squid, ran off with it. That's way too easy to actually work, but we'll see.

While working on the fish, Calvin falls into a hole in the ground and into a mine. He discovers blue dust on the rocks and a sign on the wall for a mining permit by the Crocker Group. Calvin confronts Walton about the mine and his father reveals that the Crockers found cobalt and copper. That's why they're being forced to resettle, now knowing the worth of their land.

Calvin wants to return home to stop the resettlement, but Walton wants him to stay on the land with Wade and return home. However, Walton's intentions are just as unsettling as everyone else's. Walton wants Wade to partner with Maggie, claiming that he's been marked by Mudder. Calvin tries to force Wade to join him back to Snook's Arm, but he refuses.

Fonda hurries to get her remaining samples on ice as Mary and Ruth reunite with Jay. Based on Mary's demeanor and tears, he understands what has happened. They're interrupted by the sudden arrival of a helicopter landing. It's Jim Crocker, who's instantly welcomed by Jan. Back inside, Fonda opens her cooler and finds a mysterious block of ice.

She chips into the ice and discovers a gooey ball, which she squeezes until a mini, clear squid pops out. The mini squid jumps out of her hand and scurries back into the cooler. Fonda slams the cooler shut in horror. She rushes outside to look at the giant iceberg, realizing it's a nest. In the night, Calvin hears groans and catches Maggie drugging Phil and cutting off his other leg.

Calvin grabs Phil to escape, lighting the house on fire on their way out. The house immediately bursts into flames, but Phil protests leaving for some reason despite being used as bait for the squid. Walton emerges from the house and shoots an arrow through Phil's chest, killing him. Before Walton can shoot Calvin, Wade hits (and probably kills) Walton with a tire iron. They escape as Maggie yells for Wade.
