As we’ve seen several times this season already, Black Doves season 2 episode 5, “Murder Mix,” begins right where the last episode ended. Helen (Keira Knightley), Sam (Ben Whishaw), Williams (Ella Lily Hyland), and Eleanor (Gabrielle Creevy) are headed to save Reed (Sarah Lancashire).

They argue about what to listen to in the car on the way there. Finally, they decide on Williams’ Murder Mix, and it’s a banger: Run the Jewels’ “Nobody Speak.”

Back in London, Wallace Webb (Andrew Buchan) is informed that Alexi Chenov (Goran Kostic) was killed while having dinner with the Prime Minister. They know two people from the restaurant were tied up and had their uniforms stolen.

Cecile Mason (Neve Campbell) arrives, and she is not happy, but it’s unclear to me why or what her role in this story actually is.

Back with the ragtag crew who is going to save Reed, they gear up on the road and then shoot their way into the compound where the Black Doves are keeping Reed. They try to be low-key, but that plan goes right out the window.

During the job, Williams and Eleanor also talk about their offer to kill Sam. Williams doesn’t want to do it, but Eleanor is happy with taking the deal and doing the job for a handsome cash payout. The one good thing that comes out of all of this is that we learn Williams’ first name is actually Fionnuala.

The crew works quickly to take out the men guarding Reed, but quickly, Mr. Conteh (Babou Ceesay) learns the safehouse is under attack and sends a team in to kill our four favorite assassins.

Reed reveals she’s Wildflower and that she has a daughter

Sam and Helen, as they do, get into a big argument. Sam is in crisis, as he has been since we met him, and he’s wondering what he has to show for all of this “work” besides trauma. Helen tries to give him a boost of confidence, but it’s hard to say if it worked.

Eventually, after a long shootout, Sam and Helen get to Reed in time to find her alive. Unfortunately, the Black Doves’ backup team arrives, and they then have to shoot their way out, too. It’s a whole mess.

Reed doesn’t really enjoy the rescue attempt or Helen’s questioning. Reed denies killing Black Doves agents, and she claims that she’s being set up by someone quite successfully. Reed explains what happens with Ida, who was the Chernov’s housekeeper. She claims that Ida was a double agent who didn’t realize how deep she was in until she was killed trying to set Reed up.

Reed explains what happened in Berlin when she was Wildflower. She explains that she was ready to leave Berlin and people got killed. She left her daughter, Vita, and she deleted the record of her or the operation. She also tells Helen that Franz, the man she killed in the video, was Vita’s father.

Reed also reveals that Franz rebuilt Kestrel for their daughter, Vita, to take over

Reed learned that Franz had restarted Kestrel while blackmailing Alexi Chernov and claiming he had proof the Russian oligarch was going to defect to the United States in 1988. Reed also claims that he built the organization for Vita to take over, and she has, but no one knows who she is or where she is.

Who is Vita, though?

The next clip shows Marie (Molly Chesworth), their longtime nanny, with Wallace. Is she Vita? That would be an absolute shocking twist. We also see Cecile Mason, and we don’t really know what her role in all of this is. Katia Chernov (Sylvia Hoeks) walks down the hall, and she gives Wallace a speech that she asks him to read at the upcoming summit. How fishy that she has the speech that Alexi was going to read at the summit, and now he’s dead. What organization is looking for a global platform to reshape the world? I can think of one, and it’s not the Black Doves.

Laila shows up and saves Reed, Helen, Sam, Williams, and Eleanor

In the gunfight, Williams and Eleanor share a kiss. They really are in love after all!

After shooting and fighting their way out of the building, it looks like our favorite assassins plus Reed are dead, but then Laila shows up right at the last second in a van. Not only is she alive, but she’s also on their side, even after Williams and Eleanor tried to kill her.

Also of note, Sam has multiple chances to kill Reed in the mayhem, but he doesn’t for some reason. Perhaps he really is on Helen’s side, but he still hasn’t told her that he’s supposed to kill her next on Kestrel’s demand.

Eventually, they escape and head back to London.

Officer Perryman reveals to Wallace that Helen is not who she says she is

Officer Perryman shows up with some major information about Helen’s past, but first, they have found the assassins from the restaurant. In the images, the Prime Minister recognizes Sam from the photos. He knows that he’s one of Helen’s good friends, and now, he’s suspicious.

Then, he gets an absolute bombshell dropped on him. Perryman reveals that Helen is not who she says she is. He explains the full story of Helen’s stepsister Bonnie Weir, who reveal Helen’s real name is Lily Morris. There are very few bits of information about Lily Morris, but out of nowhere, someone started sending Perryman images and more information about Lily’s past.

Wallace doesn’t really understand at first, but it becomes clear that Helen has a lot of secrets.

Helen tells Sam that she’s not running anymore

After they arrive back in London, the crew heads to a club. Helen reiterates to Sam that she’s not leaving and she’s not running this time, even if it goes sideways.

At the bar, Sam chats with Reed, and she knows that he is going to kill her like he called all the people involved in her mission in Berlin. So, we have three people in this room with active hits on their head.

Patrick (Sam Riley) calls Sam and tells him to finish the job. He also warns Sam that Williams and Eleanor have accepted the contract terms to kill him, so we have quite the Spider-Man meme at the moment.

Then, everyone starts to leave. Sam leaves with Reed, and we know what’s next.

What's going to happen in the Black Doves season 2 finale?

That’s when the episode comes to an end. Let’s just examine where things stand heading into the season 2 finale.

Sam is going to kill Reed because Kestrel is forcing him to. Williams and Eleanor, who are now officially together and in love with each other, are going to kill Sam, but they’re also going to kill Laila. Sam and Laila know that Williams and Eleanor are going to kill them. Helen, on the other hand, is completely out of the loop and doesn’t know any of this is going on. She also doesn’t know that Wallace and at least one MI5 agent know that she is a spy.

It looks like we’re headed for an explosive showdown in the Black Doves season 2 finale!
