There’s been a big secret hanging on the periphery of Brothers, the comedy starring Matthew McConaughey and Woody Harrelson as lightly fictionalized versions of themselves. It seemed at the end of last week that Woody decided it was best to leave the truth alone.

In Brothers episode 6, what’s hidden has a way of coming to light. That’s the case with the penultimate episode of the season, “The Interview.” Let’s dive in.

A big announcement

As we begin, Matthew and Valentina (Natalie Martinez) are trying to sleep. But Woody is too wound up. He pops into the bedroom with a glass of champagne. Matthew is set to be interviewed by Brian Williams in the morning, where he's going to announce his run for governor of Texas. Woody is thrilled for his friend.

While he eventually leaves the room, he trips on the sewage pipe to his bus on the way back to his bed. He thinks he sets it right, but the pipe bursts and it starts to flow. In the morning, there is a bad smell. It turns out the sewage has made its way down the hill and flooded Matthew’s barn. That’s where the interview was supposed to take place, but it’s not going to work.

Matthew’s campaign manager (Lisa Gilroy) isn’t too pleased about this change of circumstance, but it’s moving to the main house, and there is a lot of work to be done. Little Woody manages to find the sewage and laps some up before they can stop him. Before anyone knows it, he manages to find Matthew and kiss his face.

Now, with the interview rapidly approaching, Matthew has a raging case of pink eye. That leaves Valentina to believe the interview isn’t a good idea. Woody feels the same, but Matthew wants to forge ahead. So, they conspire to help.

A plan in motion

Woody sends Olive (Highdee Kuan) and Jimmy (Skyler Gisondo) to pick up Brian Williams and, essentially, keep him from the site. As they drive around, they begin to discuss their relationship, their issues, and all the drama. And, surprisingly, Brian Williams offers plenty of insight. It seems like they might work out their “situationship.” But Brian Williams begins to suspect that it’s taking far too long to get where they are going.

Back at the house, with Brian Williams missing, it seems like the interview is off. But Matthew is committed to getting it done. So, he decides to pivot. He calls on his friend, Dax Shepard, who agrees to come and get the job done. But there’s another problem.

While taking the trash out, Kai (Oona Mai Yaffe) and Wyatt (Nolan Almeida) find the green envelope unopened. Believing it to be a mistake, it was thrown out. He leaves it in the kitchen. Matthew’s campaign manager, seeing that it’s a green envelope, believes it to be prep for the interview, so she slips it into the interview file folder.

That makes things tough. Dax finally arrives, and everything gets set up for the big interview. Matthew still looks rough, but he grabs a hat to make things look sharper. He takes a seat opposite Dax and lays out his platform. It’s a strong, well-thought-out announcement, but Dax has opened the envelope and read the test results.

His first question is whether it shook Matthew to learn his father wasn’t his father and that he was actually brothers with his best friend, Woody Harrelson. Matthew is stunned to hear that.

He’s not the only one stunned. Woody is also stunned to hear the results and see the letter survived the trash. And Ma Mac (Holland Taylor) is put off guard, too. Matthew ends the interview and confronts his family. His stunned silence turns into anger as he punches Woody and walks out.

I am enjoying the ride here. It seemed like episode 6 that we weren’t ever really going to answer the question that was the central premise to start this series.

Surprisingly, the truth is out, and it turns out Matthew and Woody are brothers. Will it fracture their relationship or bring them closer together? We ended in a tough place, but I’m curious to see how everyone moves forward in the finale.
