We begin Crew Girl season 1, episode 2, with Teagan and the crew in the boat practicing together for the first time. It’s clear most of the men aren’t thrilled about the replacement, and she’s also adjusting to the new position. We'll see how quickly they begin to actually accept her as their new cox in due time, it seems.
Ella meets with the principal about the tuition, but there aren’t many options, so Ella arranges for an installment plan for the tuition. As Ella is leaving, Juliet arrives, and we find out her car stunt didn’t work, as her parents still haven't come home to check on her.
After practice, the guys all give Teagan crap as Lana prepares them for the alumni race. Teagan makes a joke about the dad, as she quickly learns the alumni they’re facing include many of the guys; this includes Josh's dad, Rich, who also happens to be Coach Hayden’s former rowmate. Teagan’s coxbox is missing, but the guys are no help. She frantically begins searching for it as Coach Hayden comes to join her. He encourages her to figure out what motivates the guys and to give herself grace as she learns the new role.
Josh complains about Coach making changes, and Ryder suggests that there are other options as Josh makes it clear he doesn’t see him as much competition and exits. He enters the boathouse to see his dad, and it’s clear things are tense between the pair as his dad goads him about the upcoming race.
Elsewhere, Cam admits that Teagan wasn’t the best and makes it clear the guys won’t go easy on her. She asks for insights into the guys, and Cam walks her through them. Cam indulges her and runs through the roster and their shortcomings: Josh isn't as strong of a rower as he thinks; Baloo crumbles under pressure (he's also Britney’s brother); Ryder is the spiral and Josh's cousin; Damon is the new guy and troublemaker; Noah takes rowing seriously but is a bit of a bore; Perry is never on rhyme; and then there's Chris, aka Crabby, who is the heart of the team but lacks stamina and self-confidence. After Cam's briefing, the guys hit the shower as Teagan grabs her things from the locker and finds her coxbox.
As Josh heads off to hit the showers, he chats with his dad, who has found out about Teagan being the new coxswain and that Josh is no longer leading the team, which, by the look on his face, he’s not thrilled about. Josh ponders who they should start with in the race, and she suggests Cam, as he’s the best, but Josh isn't sold on the idea and shuts it down. In the showers, Josh puts things to a vote, asking the guys who they each feel should get a shot at leading. Hearing the team vote without her, Teagan bursts in, surprising the guys as they vote for Josh to take the stroke seat.
At the alumni event, Ella tries to schmooze the alumni during Parents’ Night in hopes of finding a family who might sponsor Teagan and help with her tuition, but she's not having the best luck. Meanwhile, Coach Hayden is cornered by Ryder’s mom about there being an opening in stroke and suggests she’ll make a donation if Hayden will put Ryder in the spot. That's when Rich and Josh arrive, and Rich makes it clear he’s going to get Josh his position in stroke back.
This is when we learn a bit more about the complicated nature of Ryder and Josh's connection. Josh’s dad was the only heir to the Regis empire, but then it came out that his father had an affair with the dog walker and had a secret love child: Ryder’s mom. Josh and Ryder might get along well enough, but the family sees his side of the family as lesser given the scandal.
After a tip from Juliet to embrace the scandal, Ella tries drumming up support by making herself the center of drama, which is when she meets Imogen, who hints she’s not exactly in the inner circle with the women of Easten Prep either.
Lana helps Hayden avoid parents before he pulls Cam aside to name him stroke, to Cam’s excitement and surprise. After telling Cam, Rich arrives and makes it clear that he needs to stop playing around as Rich tells him his decision has already been made. The pair quickly are clued in that he picked Cam, and Rich seems up to no good.
Josh costs his team the race by ignoring Teagan
Race day arrives, and Ella decides to start a new pre-game tradition. She takes Teagan to a quiet place she used to come to with a rower friend back when she was in school and gives her a quick pep talk before heading out.
As Hayden enters the room to get the team ready for their race, he informs Cam there has been a change in plans and assures him he’ll make it up to him. He then informs the group that Josh is back in stroke. When the guys leave, Hayden informs him that it was out of his hands and there was nothing he could do. Cam makes it clear he’s going to the Olympics one day as he questions whether Coach Hayden thinks Josh will ever do the same.
The crew gets into the boat, preparing, and the dads quickly show off as they work in unison under their coxswain to get into the boat. Teagan quickly informs Josh of her plan, and he agrees it’s not a bad idea as the race begins. They get off to an early lead, but the alumni begin to close the gap, and Josh decides to call an audible as he ignores Teagan, and they fall behind, with the alumni winning the race.
After the race, the crew serves up the alumni winners at the cookout as Rich rubs it in. This leads Josh to confronting Teagan for not listening, and Ryder jumps in to agree with her about the loss being Josh's fault for him not following her directions. Josh tells her she should just quit as Cam comes to her defense before Josh storms off. Cam encourages her to let the loss go as she points out how it should have been him in stroke.
Elsewhere, Britney comes to see Baloo and tells him to remove a pool pic, as it’s going to embarrass their mom as it’s a tad thirsty, just as he gets a DM from a guy and strikes up a conversation.
Coach Hayden comes up to the team and alumni. He begins giving a speech about committing to one another as Rich cuts him off and makes it about defeating Westview, their rivals. We then come to learn that Rich made a call to help the principal’s niece get an internship, which landed Josh back in stroke, as Hayden reminds him you can’t buy a championship. Rich later catches up with Josh and tells him the anger he feels after the loss is what will fuel him to win. He tells Josh he’ll beat the alumni next year, and he expects nothing less.
Ella bumps into Imogen at the dinner, and Ella impresses her with her knowledge of event planning. She invites her to a James Bond-inspired casino night party, and Ella makes a joke about it being an overdone theme, not realizing it’s Imogen’s son’s party, and Imogen excuses herself.
Later, Ella bumps into Hayden at her spot, and we quickly piece together that he was the old crew friend from her days at the school. To her surprise, he doesn’t know what happened, as he hadn’t Googled her. We learn he’s a single parent as well, as he pieces together that Teagan is her daughter. He recalls how he could never change her mind when they were younger and mentions he’s glad she’s back. Ella admits life is kicking her ass as he reminds her how hard she worked back in the day and knows how to survive.
Ryder invites Josh to join them for a dip, and Josh confronts him. Ryder reminds him he’s a Regis too as he points out how Rich is such a dick to Josh, and he just takes it. Josh then calls Ryder’s mom a leech, and Ryder punches him in the face as the pair begin throwing punches before Teagan stops the fight by throwing a bucket of water on them. Josh returns the favor by dumping seaweed on her head just as Hayden arrives to break things up and send everyone home.
The Iron Crucible race ends with a new stroke being named
The Iron Crucible race arrives. It’s a seven-course obstacle with a 2-mile run separating each. Hayden decides to throw something into the prize by informing them that whoever makes it furthest will earn the stroke seat.
At the race, Ella bumps into Imoge. As they talk, she admits Ella was right; she wants this party to be better than good, and Ella offers to help plan the event. Imogen takes her up on the offer, giving Ella quite a budget and commission fee to put the party together.
As the race unfolds, Josh and Ryder cheat by tying up the rope course to prevent Cam from winning. That's when Teagan catches up to him and gets to take in quite a view as Cam stands shirtless. Ater gaining her composure, she comes up with a plan to tag team with him to get the rope down so they can continue with the course. He lifts her up on his shoulders, and she is able to get the rope down so they can scale it. As they near the wall, Ryder and Josh are running out of gas and drop to rest. Teagan is starting to slow down and tells Cam to go ahead without her so she doesn’t slow him down and cost him stroke.
Much to Josh and Ryder’s surprise, Cam comes running up to check in. He tags in before collapsing as well alongside them. Meanwhile, Teagan passes out in the woods. She sees a memory of her dad encouraging her to push through the pain, as it’s then she’ll find what she’s made of. She gets back up and continues on the way and reaches the rope wall to find the guys. She leaves them speechless as they watch her begin to scale the wall. All three guys jump up and attempt to follow after her.
Back at the finish line, Teagan arrives and rings the bell, followed by Ryder, Cam, and Josh. Cam congratulates Teagan as Rich congratulates Josh on finishing but takes a dig at him for letting his cousin finish first. Coach Hayden congratulates his four crew members and reminds them they won by following Teagan. Ryder, meanwhile, earns the spot on stroke. Ella catches up with Teagan, who is surprised to know that her mom and Coach Hayden are old friends. Ella asks how Teagan finished the race, and Teagan admits it was something Dad taught her and got her through as they head home.
Back at the house, Ella tells Teagan about getting her job as an event planner, which can help cover her tuition. Ella is preparing to meet with Imogen when we hear a knock at the door. Much to Teagan’s surprise, Imogen's son happens to be none other than Josh. Yep, things just got a lot more complicated it seems!
