As we enter the back half of Crew Girl season 1, we open with a jump from the previous episode as Josh goes in for his follow-up and is told to make an appointment with his cardiologist as soon as possible. It's clear this heart condition is quite serious, but we'll see if and when he finally starts treating it as such.
After training, Cam tells Ryder he’s coming for stroke as Ryder makes it clear the team would never follow a FADE over a Regis. Teagan comes over after to remind him they have their taco date before Josh finally arrives at practice and lies to the team about having a dentist appointment.
Teagan hangs back and confronts him over his comment at the celebration. She points out how perfect Britney is for him, and he begins to note that she expects him to be this but pulls back before telling her the truth about how his life is anything but perfect.
Ella drops in looking for Hayden but finds Madison instead, who gives her a rough time, brushing off how this never works for PTO moms wanting to get flirty with him. Just as Ella is about to leave, Hayden arrives, and he admits that Madison has grown accustomed to running defense. The pair try to find a time for their dates as he invites her to join him in chaperoning the fall formal, which gives her a chance not only to get to spend time with him but also to catch up with a former classmate who could help streamline some permits needed for renovations on Ella and Teagan’s home.
Josh meets up with Britney, who surprises him with a recreation of their first date. Rather than giving Josh the chance to say much, Britney informs him she arranged for a magazine feature on their relationship, pitching them as an up-and-coming power couple.
Cam and Teagan finally enjoy their date as their relationship begins to bloom
During their taco date, Cam ends up helping Teagan with a blister on her hand, and the pair bond over their love of rowing. Cam admits it’s where he feels the most like him. It might sound crazy, but when he watches the Olympics, he always thinks that’s where he’s meant to be; he just needs people to believe in him. Teagan assures him people do, but he notes that the team doesn’t see him as stroke and asks for her advice. She suggests they don’t follow him because he always has his guard up and needs to let them in and show them the Cam she knows. She suggests they go to fall formal with the crew, inviting him to the dance.
The pair enlist Perry for help with Cam’s fall formal suit to push him out of his comfort zone. Perry asks him about his style, but Cam really only cares about comfort, which gives Perry the idea for the perfect combo: a simple black suit. Elsewhere, Britney has had her designer send over some suits for him to choose from that will match her dress. She has big plans for them to be king and queen of the dance and bask in their glory. He asks her to meet before the dance to talk about some things, but she brushes the idea off as she needs time for her hair beforehand. Senator Garner, Britney’s mom, arrives and tries to pull Britney aside to catch up, but she turns the offer down to get Josh ready for the dance.
After his styling moment, Cam arrives at his dad’s auto shop as he’s on a phone, and it’s clear that money is tight. He tells Cam his new school uniform will have to wait, and he’ll need help around the shop in the evening. Cam gets permission to go to the fall formal and asks to borrow the truck, but his dad has another idea.
Meanwhile, the principal comes looking for Coach Hayden but finds Ryder instead, who asks for help with a coach problem, said problem being the unfair treatment Ryder feels Josh is getting after Coach allowed Josh to miss practice but forbade him from missing practice for a tryout he landed.
Ella arrives at the dance and bumps into Didi, and she tries to ask for Ella’s help in putting in a good word for her, but she turns down the offer, and it’s clear things are icy. Hayden and Madison arrive, and Madison grills her on what she brings to the table if she’s pursuing her father.
The guys gradually gather outside as Cam and Teagan roll up to make their grand entrance, and it’s clear from the look on Josh’s face that he’s jealous that it’s Cam she’s attending the dance with. The group all head inside, and Josh asks her about her relationship with Cam as he compliments her, and she heads off to take her seat with Cam before Josh and Britney make their entry as king and queen.
As the music begins, Teagan nudges Cam to take to the dance floor and let loose with the rest of the guys. Once she gets him on the dance floor, he freezes up a bit so Teagan takes matters into her own hands. She pushes Cam into the center of the dance center, literally, and helps him break from his comfort zone as he shows off.
Elsewhere, Ella tries to lend a hand to Didi when the air conditioner goes out and ends up getting them locked in a room together. Ella asks what she’s done as Didi points out how she’s always been helpless and relied on everyone else to keep her together and make things happen for them. After Didi says her piece, Ella opens up the vent and heads in, determined to find a way out of the room for them. She finds her way out and comes back to unlock the door, which impresses Didi, who offers to lend her a hand with the paperwork.
Two couples break up as Crew Girl season 1 episode 5 comes to a close
As the dance continues, Amber invites the crew team to the afterparty, which comes with a $250 ticket, with the money going to the EPA. Cam’s silence is picked up on as Teagan admits she doesn’t want to leave as she’s having a great time, which is when Perry buys tickets for them both, calling it a good cause. Teagan sees it as progress that Perry had Cam’s back, but he points out that the EPA is the fund that helps cover his tuition, making him the “good cause.”
The moment brings the mood down for Cam, and Teagan tries to show him it’s not a big deal, but he’s not sure how to show the guys who he really is when he can’t afford a uniform and has to work at the shop. It’s like no matter how much he does, he’s always so far from being who he wants to be, which isn’t okay. He apologizes for not being able to do this right now as he leaves.
Meanwhile, Britney confronts Josh about how it doesn’t seem like he wants to be here, and he admits he’s not having fun. He tells her it’s like they’ve been acting happy for a long time but aren’t actually happy; they don’t want the same things, and he can’t pretend anymore. She immediately questions whether it’s Teagan, as he denies her having any role in this decision. He informs her their relationship is over right before they’re set to take to the dance floor for their final dance of the night.
Juliet comforts Teagan as she assures her there was nothing she could do, as Perry comes up and compliments Juliet on her outfit and invites her to dance, taking Teagan’s earlier advice to realize that the tension between them is because he’s finally met someone who challenges him.
As the episode begins to wind down, Coach Hayden comes to see Ryder and informs him that he’s out of the stroke seat effective immediately after he went over his head to the principal to get his way, noting that he’s clearly not a leader. Josh is taking the stroke seat at the next regatta.
In the closing moments, Josh finds Teagan in the boathouse, and she admits her night didn’t quite go as planned as she asks what he’s doing there. He admits his night was also a bust as he broke up with Britney. Teagan presses him on whether it was the right move, and she asks if that means Britney hates him more than her, which is when he jokes they have that in common, as they both hate him. Teagan quips that she doesn’t hate him before he kisses her. She pulls back at first before leaning in to kiss him back!
