After an intense fall formal that brought the end to two relationships, we jump ahead in Crew Girl season 1, episode 6, via an episode that makes it clear early on that this episode will be unique to those before it. This is because we start the episode 20 minutes before the regatta rather than jumping to the present day.
We see someone sneak into the boathouse and saw one of the oars before placing tape over it and returning it to the place with the rest of the oars. We then cut back to two hours and 20 minutes before the race, where Teagan and Josh are sneaking around making out before the race in the very place where the oar was tampered with at the top of the episode. Their makeout session is cut short when her alarm goes off as she heads out before the rest of the team arrives.
Hayden and Madison arrive and begin unloading the truck as Cam pulls up next to them. Madison asks Cam about the dance, and he admits he and Teagan are not happening as he helps her with some of the items from her dad’s truck. She tries to get him to open up, but he remains adamant it’s just not going to work. She notices a for-sale sign on his truck, and he admits the shop is struggling and money is tight, so his dad has no choice but to seel the truck.
As the team prepares for the race, Rich surprises Josh before the meet and informs him that his grandad prompted Katrina over Rick and tells him he needs a win. Josh winning the regatta will be a win that will help them get back in grandad's good graces, adding even more pressure to Josh.
Cam continues to ice Teagan out as the guys watch on before Perry comes up to try to get info on why they skipped the afterparty. She gives him nothing, much to the group’s displeasure. Coach Hayden pulls the guys together and makes it clear that a win here can help put them in the perfect position to win the Haverford Cup. He dismisses them as Baloo gets a call from Logan asking to meet up before the race.
Ryder tries to get in Josh’s head about the pressure, noting that when he was in stroke they won, as he wants him not to screw things up. Cam and Josh get into it in the locker room as Josh notices Cam’s broken sunglasses, which were damaged earlier when Madison accidentally stepped on them. He presses Cam about a backup pair, as Cam rebuts that not everyone has an extra $300 to spare. Josh points out how they have to all wear the same uniforms and tells the team he’ll just tell the guys to go sunglasses-free. Things get tense as Cam points out that he deserves to be in stroke but is always overlooked, as he suggests that perhaps everything Josh has, he doesn’t deserve.
Josh's oar is sabotaged, costing the team the win at the regatta
As the regatta unfolds, things are going well until Josh’s oar snaps, which disqualifies them from the race. Coach Hayden tries to raise spirits and points out they still have a chance of making the Haverford Cup and just have to wait to see how the other teams place. Noah tries to raise the spirits with the afterparty, but this isn’t your normal party. It seems Noah has planned an elaborate murder mystery party, which the guys aren’t exactly into, but Teagan rallies them all to enjoy it. As the group leaves, Josh tries calling his dad to apologize for letting him down, but his dad seems to be ignoring his calls.
The party begins as the group breaks off into their assigned teams, which includes Teagan and Josh, to head out to the supply shed, where their fun is halted by the sight of the broken oar. Josh admits his dad hasn’t called and he probably won’t, as he was really disappointed. As Teagan assures him they’ll get it next time, she takes a closer look at the oar and notices it was sawed through so it would break during the race. They rally the rest of the guys and fill them in, wondering how someone would have cut the oar in the boathouse. They deduce that it would have to be someone on the team who cut the oar, as you need a keycard to enter the shed.
Teagan and Noah take the lead on the case. They narrow down that the sabotage would have had to happen in the morning before the race. Noah notes they need to figure out who would target Josh, as he always picks the oar with the pink tape.
Josh questions why someone was targeting him and quickly turns to Ryder, who throws suspicions on Baloo for breaking up with Britney on her big night. Baloo suggests that Teagan was responsible, as they’ve been at odds from the beginning, as she notes that she’s their cox and would never do anything. Noah suggests that Perry has motive, and Perry admits that he was mad about him copying his hair color. Quaid then suggests Cam was behind it and returns the favor. The conversation shifts back to Ryder, and Quaid searches his bag for the saw. Ryder admits he doesn’t want Josh to lose; he wants to beat him in front of everyone.
Who sabotaged Josh's oar?
Teagan notes there is a camera, and the footage on Coach Hayden’s computer would tell them who it was. As the group breaks, Teagan finds Josh alone and asks him who he thinks did this for real. He wonders if it could be Cam as he tells her about their fight this morning. Teagan dismisses the idea at first before admitting that Coach Hayden pulled Ryder out to put Josh in stroke instead of Cam, despite him deserving it more. Josh asks her to be honest, and Teagan points out that Cam deserves the stroke seat as he puts the team first and pulls for the boat, while Josh tends to put himself first. He questions how she thinks he’s good enough to make out with but not for stroke as he storms off.
After the fight, Teagan rejoins Noah, and he’s feeling down as everyone hates his party. She tries to lift his spirit as she points out that the team aren’t puzzle people. She admits that if they weren’t in a boat together, they might not be friends, but that’s what’s cool about being part of a team, as it exposes you to everyone’s unique interests; people who wouldn’t be your people become your people. She encourages him to tap into his skills to figure out this mystery, and he walks her through the evidence. He rules out the various members one by one as he realizes Cam said he was stretching before the race, but he wasn’t in the photo Perry and Crabby took.
Teagan tracks Cam down and finds him looking for the saw. She asks about his story and how he wasn’t in their photo. He gets defensive as he questions whether she thinks he did it, and she asks about how he’s been acting different. She mentions him picking a fight with Josh, and he questions how she knew this, as she admits that Josh told her. Cam admits that he was selling his dad’s truck to one of the Westview rowers, as he makes it clear that if she thought he would do this, she really doesn’t know him at all.
Perry is able to get his hands on the footage, which shows Teagan entering followed by Josh. Later, they find Baloo meeting with someone from Westview in boat storage. He admits that his thirst-trap guy is from the rival team. Baloo leaves first, leaving Logan alone, and they immediately assume he did it. Assuming the worst, Baloo sends him a voice memo telling him to lose his number and calling him out for using him before returning to the group, as Logan sends him a series of messages asking what happened. Teagan takes the phone and blocks him as Baloo steps away to take a minute.
Josh eventually catches up with Baloo to see how he is and apologizes. He thanks Baloo for being such a good friend to him as he begins to tell him something but pulls back and apologizes for not being able to make any of this better. Baloo makes it clear that he’s still mad at him for how he broke up with his sister.
The rankings come through, and the team still made it to the Haverford Cup. Teagan steps away to meet with Josh at the crew house and tells her she’s right about him not doing what’s best for the team. He admits he’s selfish and hurts people, as evident by how everyone had a motive against him. He tells her she shouldn’t be with him, as he’s not a good person. She asks him to be honest with her, and he tells her that they’re both on the rebound and should cut their losses.
After Teagan leaves, Josh lowers the steps in the room to the attic, and we see him pull out the saw. We then cut back to watch him cut the oar himself before the race. It turns out after his fight with Cam, he was informed he needed emergency surgery and was at serious risk of a heart attack. His doctor made it clear he could not race, so he sabotaged the team rather than coming clean about his health.
