It's been a long time coming for Jessica Chastain to make her return to the small screen. The Academy Award-winning movie star was set to headline her latest television project last in year in the Apple TV original crime thriller The Savant. However, days before its premiere, the streaming service unexpectedly pulled the series from its release schedule without explanation.
While The Savant was planned for its premiere back in September 2025, Apple TV delayed the series in a moved that was widely believed to be a response of the assassination of Charlie Kirk given the show's thematic similarities about public shootings. Chastain later hinted that the series could be coming in summer 2026, but now the streamer has an actual release window pegged.
Apple TV reveals The Savant is coming in spring 2027
Unfortunately, Apple TV still hasn't set a concrete release date, but the streamer has indicated that The Savant will make its premiere sometime in spring 2027. The release date will come well over one year after the show was intended to debut, and given the broad "spring" release window, we could be checking out the show at long last anywhere between March to May 2027.
Based on the Cosmopolitan magazine article "Is It Possible to Stop a Mass Shooting Before It Happens?" published in 2019, The Savant centers on Chastain's titular character Jodi Goodwin, who manages to be a savant at preventing mass shootings and other public attacks by sneaking her way into online hate organizations and learning about their plans before they're put into action.
Apple TV shared the show's official synopsis: "The tense and thrilling series follows an undercover investigator known as “The Savant” (Jessica Chastain) as she infiltrates online hate groups in an effort to stop domestic extremists before they act."
In addition to Chastain in the leading role, The Savant also features performances by Nnamdi Asomugha, James Badge Dale, Cole Doman, Michael Mosley, Dagmara Domińczyk, Jordana Spiro, Hannah Gross, David Wilson Barnes, Keeley Karsten, and Pablo Schreiber in recurring, supporting, and guest roles.
It's unclear why Apple TV opted to hold the series for so long before finally deciding on a release window. The Savant was held back for the entirety of 2026, which could have been a simple case of not wanting to simply burn off the series alongside all of the other limited and other series the streamer released this year, including the recent hits WIdow's Bay and Lucky.
A spring 2027 release allows for The Savant to be eligible to compete in the 2027 Emmy Awards, with Chastain's performance likely to be the driving force of the show's awards campaigns. Chastain was previously nominated for an Emmy in 2023 for her performance in the Showtime limited series George & Tammy. She also landed Golden Globe nominations for the series and HBO's limited series Scenes from a Marriage.
Because The Savant is being eyed to compete at the 2027 Emmy Awards, we can deduce that Apple TV is planning to premiere and run the series ahead of the May 31, 2027 deadline for eligibility. The window of opportunity already opened on June 1, 2026, meaning before the show will even premiere, there's already stiff competition.
Even beyond the Emmys consideration of it all, The Savant will now be arriving with much higher expectations. Sure, it's not a new season of an established series, but its various delays those who have been waiting to check out Chastain's latest television role will likely be wondering what the hold up was and whether it was worth the wait.
