My Life with the Walter Boys season 3 has been a whirlwind of emotions and lessons learned for all the characters. Although the season starts on a high note, it ends with several characters getting the short end of the stick, especially Cole and Alex.
The season finale kicks off with Jackie suffering a setback at the community space. The ceiling leaks and falls off, delaying the annex's opening by at least a month. Jackie tries to recruit the City Council’s help, but the cost alone wouldn’t be enough to cover the repairs and the party.
Heartbroken and disappointed, Jackie takes her anger out on Cole, who was only trying to look out for her. She ends up saying that she’ll get over all the setbacks in her life, including him. This leads Cole to want to do something for Jackie as a way to make up for the hurt he caused her.
Cole asks Richard for help, even leveraging the fact that he broke up with Jackie because Richard thought he was jeopardizing Jackie’s future. Luckily, Richard comes through, and he calls in a favor with his contractors to fix the community space. The Walter household also assembles to help out Jackie, even Cole, but he remains out of sight to not upset Jackie.
The Walter kids are going places
It’s a season of change for the Walter household as most of the kids are all set to go on their separate journeys. Will is moving out for better opportunities, Nathan gets accepted for a European band tour, and Danny receives a college acceptance letter.
As Katherine rightfully says, it’s time for the Walter family to prepare for a new chapter. They have done everything they can as parents, and it's now time to sit back and watch the kids leave the nest. As for Danny, even though he’s happy he got accepted to his second-choice college, he’s worried he’d be far away from Erin.
He suggests he can go to college with Erin to Silver Falls, but she turns him down, saying that’s not his dream. However, Danny reminds Erin that his dream is wherever she is, and while it sounds romantic, everyone knows it’s the setup for a future conflict.
Danny and Erin’s romance is perfect, and it can remain so, but both of them have different goals, and either one compromising their dreams would automatically put pressure on the other. Erin has a plan, and she can’t leave Silver Falls, and there’s nothing for Danny in this small town. Ultimately, their love would have to withstand the harsh reality of either a long-distance relationship or having no relationship at all.
Alex hits a dead end with Kiley
The viewers have nothing but sympathy for Alex in season 3 because he has almost every time gotten the short end of the stick. First, he lost his girlfriend to his older brother; then he lost his best friend to her boyfriend. He quit bronc riding, and lastly, he ended up kissing Kiley while she was still dating Dylan.
He tells Nathan and Cole about the kiss, but none of them make a big deal out of it because they always knew it was bound to happen. It has been more or less obvious to everyone except Kiley and Alex that they’re perfect for each other, and it’s a loss that they never gave this side of their relationship a chance.
Alex tries to talk to Riley but ends up admitting it was a mistake and that he’s not the one to destroy someone else’s relationship. He asks Kiley to put it all behind her, and honestly, her expression seemed as if she wanted Alex to say the exact opposite because his words somehow made up her mind.
When he tries to strike up a conversation with Kiley later at the community space party, Dylan comes out and asks Alex to give Kiley some space. He tells Alex that he understands that they’re childhood friends and very close, but Kiley wants him to be away from her for a while.
Still, Alex doesn’t give up and goes to Kiley’s house to get the girl before it's too late. Unfortunately, Alex suffers a massive blow in this relationship as well because when Kiley opens the door, he sees Dylan helping her out with her grandma. This only proved that Kiley has decided not to jeopardize her relationship by keeping Alex close. She gave whatever special spot Alex had in her life to Dylan by opening her home and her grandmother’s condition to him. For the time being, it seems that Alex Walter has hit a new low.
What happens to Cole Walter at the end?
When Cole impulsively jumped into street racing in episode 9, it made Dylan worried. That’s why he calls in Mac to talk Cole out of putting his life in danger. Mac offers Cole the chance to participate in the upcoming race and focus his energies in the right place, as this line of work can earn him both respect and money for everything he needs.
But Cole being Cole, he downright refuses to listen to reason, but Dylan knows his best friend’s patterns. He immediately pulls the plug on everything, warning Cole that he can only take his car if he wants to participate in actual races.
Of course, Cole storms out and feels betrayed, but when he has time to sit on what he was going to do, he realizes he was in the wrong. He apologizes to Dylan and informs him that he’ll be participating in the drag race. The two make up, and Dylan gives him the keys.
Unfortunately, Cole may have gotten the car back, but the girl he loves is slipping away right in front of him, and he doesn’t do anything about it. As he watches Jackie and Elliot sit in a car and drive away together for the party, Alex warns Cole that if he doesn’t do something now, he’ll end up losing Jackie forever, regardless of what both Elliot and Richard think is best for her.
As Jackie’s party kicks in full swing, Cole gets ready to take the wheel. This time, he has his parents supporting him from the stands. The race follows a knockout format, and the last two drivers standing will compete for the first spot and the prize money.
As expected, Cole outdoes himself to secure a spot in the final race against Danvers. However, just before the race, he meets up with his parents, who encourage him not to give up on Jackie. Katherine helps Cole understand that no one can decide who Jackie can be with except Jackie herself. This gets Cole thinking, but the real nudge comes from Jackie.
Alex informs Jackie at the party that it was Cole who organized help for her and that he still cares. Alex’s words leave Jackie feeling conflicted. She doesn’t understand why Cole would break up with her only to do something like that. Although this information makes her furious, she reluctantly sends a thank-you text to Cole.
He reads it just before the final round, and it hits him. He was so worried about what others thought of him that he let a wonderful girl go. The emotions hit him like a bus, and he jumps out of the car to get the girl of his dreams.
Unfortunately, as romantic as it sounds, that’s not how Cole and Jackie’s love story ends – or starts, for that matter. Cole does set out to race to Jackie at her party, but an enraged Danvers intercepts him. He was furious because he lost the opportunity to win the prize money when Cole decided to forfeit.
As Cole and Danvers go wheel-to-wheel, we see the striking parallels between Jackie's and Cole’s lives and the consequences of their decisions. Jackie dances the night away with Elliot at the party while Cole struggles to handle the situation with Danvers.
All Cole wanted was to go to the girl he loved, but he ended up rolling at the side of the road as Jackie kissed his childhood friend to drown her sorrows deep within. The narrative reflects on how Cole might have ended up right back where he first started. My Life with the Walter Boys season 3 ends with Cole’s life hanging in the balance while Jackie dances the night away, seemingly getting everything she wanted.
