We’re officially on the second half of Outer Banks season 5! There are only five episodes to go in the last season of the hit Netflix original series, and it starts on a huge cliffhanger from episode 5.

In the episode, titled "The Big Easy," John B (Chase Stokes) and Sarah (Madelyn Cline) visit a huge house in the country that Sarah’s mom, who we have yet to meet, owns. I don’t know why we’re just learning about this house now, but they are looking for the scytale. When they arrive, the house appears to be empty, but it’s clear that it’s not.

Groff returns to the Outer Banks and finds Sarah and John B

John B and Sarah find a note in the place where the Scytale should be. Then, the guys who were working with Julio arrive, and John B and Sarah try to hide in the attic. Unfortunately, Chandler Groff (J. Anthony Crane) is there! He grabs Sarah and holds a gun to her head. He wants the note that they found. He’s looking for the scytale, too.

Julio’s guys start shooting at them, and they use the distraction to escape. They fight off Groff and flee through a vent. They make it back to the Twinkie while Julio’s guys shoot at Groff.

In the van, Sarah says they need to go back to warn Kiara (Madison Bailey) that Groff is back, but John B is worried about how Julio’s guys found them so quickly. He wants to leave town immediately.

Sarah also reveals the note that she found in the box that should have had the scytale. It reads, “You don’t get everything, Ward, even though you think you do,” and it’s signed by E. They don’t know what that means, but it seems pretty clear that Sarah’s mom has the scytale.

Right then, Groff catches them on a motorcycle. John B swerves a bit, and Groff crashes. He gets up and looks mad.

Immediately after, Sarah texts Kiara and tells her that Groff is back. Kie leaves the restaurant. Pope (Jonathan Daviss) and Cleo (Carlacia Grant), who are making plans for their future, get the text, too, and hop their motorcycle to go help Sarah and John B. Cleo also calls 911 and tells them Groff is back and chasing them.

Groff gets arrested before he kills John B and Sarah

Sarah and John B make it to the ferry, but Groff catches up to them right the last second.

Groff walks up to the Twinkie, and he starts to pull out a gun when Shoupe jumps out and pulls a gun on him. He warns Groff, and he makes him turn around. He arrests Groff right as Cleo, Pope, and Kiara arrive at the ferry.

John B and Sarah head to New Orleans to track down Sarah’s mom and find the scytale

John B and Sarah don’t get off, though. They are headed for the mainland. They are going to New Orleans to try to find Sarah’s mom and the scytale.

On the ferry, one of Julio’s guys puts a phone in the Twinkie to track them, and it’s clear that John B and Sarah are not out of trouble yet.

Rafe and Sofia get back together

Rafe (Drew Starkey) arrives home to find Dale Zeasy (Jason Davis) there. He pressures Rafe into selling, but Rafe is uneasy about it. Quite frankly, he’s pissed. The only thing left in the house is Sofia’s things. He texts her to come pick them up, and as he carries them outside, the boxes break.

Rafae proceeds to smash a bunch of shit until Sofia (Fiona Palomo) pulls up. Sofia apologizes to him for everything, and he gives her back the ring that he gave her. She tries to give it back, and then Rafe reminds her to pick up her stuff.

Sofia breaks down in the front yard cleaning up everything. Something breaks within Rafe, and he comforts her for the first time since everything happened. She apologizes again through her sobs, and Rafe seems to finally forgive her.

In the morning, Rafe and Sofia wake up in Rafe’s empty house. It looks like they are back together. Sofia tries to talk him out of doing the deal and signing the papers to sell Tannyhill. Sofia warns him that something is off with Dale and those guys. She tells Rafe not to show up and see how they respond.

Groff gets out of jail because Shoupe doesn’t have anything on him

In the morning, the DA pays Shoupe (Cullen Moss) a visit and demands that he release Groff. They can’t pin any of the murders in the last few years on him. Shoupe is forced to release him.

Outside the sheriff's office, Kiara, Cleo, and Pope confront Shoupe after Groff leaves. When Kiara tries to get in Groff’s way, Shoupe stops her.

Meanwhile, in the Baltics, Finch (Jason Alan Carvell) and Dalia (Pollyanna McIntosh) learn that Groff is back in the Outer Banks. They also learn that the argument with Groff was all over an artifact. They think it’s the thing they are looking for, too.

It seems they are going to make a big move. When Groff misses his ferry, Dalia calls Groff and asks him for a favor, and he agrees.

Back with Kiara, Pope, and Cleo, they’re just hanging out, throwing knives, and stuff. Pope gives a gun to Kie to make sure she has protection from Groff.

John B and Sarah are attacked by Julio’s guys on the way to New Orleans

On their way to New Orleans, Sarah and John B talk about if they want a boy or a girl. Unfortunately, they are being tracked. When they stop for gas, Julio’s guys cut the fuel line, so the Twinkie runs out of gas, and the guys show up and try to kill them.

John B and Sarah get into a big fight, but John B and Sarah survive and steal their car. As they drive away, John B starts to apologize, but Sarah stops him because she can feel the baby moving for the first time. They travel the rest of the way to New Orleans.

Unfortunately, John B left his phone in the Twinkie with the exact location they are going to. Julio’s guys find it.

John B and Sarah find Sarah’s mom, Ellie, and we learn why Ellie left

In New Orleans, John B and Sarah go to look for her mom. They find her in a bar, singing and bartending. She’s the owner of the bar. Sarah meets her for the first time, and they head to her apartment nearby to chat more.

Sarah’s mom, Ellie (Natalie Brown), reveals that she never actually wanted to leave. She and Ward (Charles Esten) had issues because Ward was abusive and obsessed with revenge. She threatened to take the kids. Ward drugged her and framed her as a bad mother. He also told her that he would kill her if she ever came back, so she didn’t.

We see the flashback of Ward doing that, and Charles Esten, who played Ward, returns to Outer Banks for the final season.

Sarah asks her for the scytale, but Ellie says that she sold it a long time ago. Sarah also tells her mom that she’s pregnant and that she’s going to be a great mom.

When Sarah and John B go outside, they see the Twinkie, which means Julio’s men found them.

Julio’s men attack Ellie

In the apartment, Ellie finds the scytale. It’s clear that she still had it. Then, she hears a knock on the door, and it’s Julio’s men. They found them. Ellie tries to fight her way out, but she can't. John B and Sarah arrive just in time to make it a fairer fight. Then, Ellie gets a shotgun and shoots one of the dudes. John B tases the other.

Ellie leads them to her boat. They’re getting out of there. Clearly, Ellie knows something. She gives the scytale to Sarah. Ellie was trying to protect Sarah because she knows who wants it. Likely, she is referring to the Corsairs.

Dalia and the Corsairs kill Julio’s men and steal the scytale

When they get to the boat, Julio’s men catch up to them. They are going to kill them when a few shots ring out. Julio’s men drop dead. The Corsairs found them, and they saved their lives. Dalia and her men leave with the scytale after throwing Julio’s men overboard.

After the Corsairs leave, Sarah faints and falls into the boat. The episode ends as John B yells her name.

Is Sarah okay? Is the baby okay? Those are the big questions I have heading into episode 7.

Overall, I really enjoyed this episode. It’s probably my favorite episode of the season so far. We covered a lot of ground, but we also got to see a lot of John B and Sarah time before a huge revelation about Sarah’s mom and why she left. After all this time, she held on to the scytale, too.

It was interesting to see Esten return as Ward in the flashbacks, too. Will we see more of him this season? We'll find out!

I’m eager to see where the story goes from here. On to Outer Banks season 5 episode 7!
