Outer Banks season 5 episode 6 felt like a real episode of Outer Banks for, possibly, the first time this season.
In episode 6, Groff (J. Anthony Crane) returned, and Sarah (Madelyn Cline) found her mother, Ellie (Natalie Brown), all the way in New Orleans. Right when Ellie was about to give Sarah and John B (Chase Stokes) the scytale, the Corsairs showed up, saved their lives by killing Julio’s men, and took the scytale for themselves. Then, Sarah collapsed on the boat and needed to be taken to the hospital.
Sarah and the baby are doing well after the scare in episode 6
That’s where episode 7, “Bal de Sauvages,” begins. Thankfully, Sarah is okay, and the baby is fine, too. She just needs to take better care of herself. She’s at the hospital, and she gets an ultrasound and pictures of the baby.
From there, Sarah and John B go back to Ellie’s place, and she tells them that Trent Wincloss, a local rich guy, bought a bunch of artifacts from Ellie and Ward when he moved to the Outer Banks. Ellie remembers that there were images and drawings of the scytale. So, John B and Sarah think they can break in or something and steal what they need.
Then, they leave New Orleans. Along the way, John B tries to get Sarah to settle down after everything that’s happened. They have a baby on the way, but Sarah isn’t down with that plan. She wants to go for the Blue Crown.
Dale tries blackmailing Heyward into selling his business
Back in the Outer Banks, Dale (Jason Davis) is pressuring Heyward (E. Roger Mitchel) to sell his shop. When Heyward won’t sell, Dale blackmails him with the video of Pope (Jonathan Daviss) and John B breaking into Topper’s house.
Either Heyward sells him the shop and land, or Dale turns in the video as evidence and sends Pope back to jail. Pope learns what’s happening, and he begs his dad not to sell.
Cleo (Carlacia Grant) tries to talk Pope out of what he’s about to do, but Kiara (Madison Bailey) puts the pressure on him.
Pope confronts Dale and threatens to sue him to invalidate the sale for blackmail. Dale tells Pope that if he doesn’t cooperate, he’s going to report Cleo to immigration and get her deported. Pope freaks out, and he tries to attack Dale. Luckily, there’s a tall fence in the way.
Finch reveals they have a few days before they need to use the Blue Crown
In Europe, Finch (Jason Alan Carvell) chats with Dalia (Pollyanna McIntosh) about the Blue Crown. He needs to learn and practice the incantation because in a few days, they will have a chance to use the crown.
The Pogues go to a party to steal diagrams of the scytale
Meanwhile, Sarah and John B arrive back on the island, and they share the good news. Wincloss is hosting a party that night, so they come up with a plan to crash the party as caterers and then sneak in and take pictures of the Scytale diagram. What could possibly go wrong?
Unfortunately, Henrique discovers that the man, Wincloss, has a blueprint for some artifacts from Tannyhill on the island. He calls Groff and tells him.
So, Groff is going to be there, too, wearing a mask, and he’s brought some kind of poison with him.
At the party, Kie is going to distract Wincloss and get a look at where he’s hiding the documents. Then, someone else will go steal them.
The plan works to perfect. Kie has a meet-cute of sorts with Wincloss, and he’s interested from the jump. They have some drinks together. Groff watches wearing a creepy mask.
While this is all happening, Pope and Cleo and Sarah and John B chat. Cleo opens up to Pope about the possibility of her getting deported. Pope offers to marry her, but Cleo doesn’t want his charity. She wants the love from Pope.
Sarah sneaks in and gets the pictures they need of the scytale diagrams
Later, Kie tells Wincloss she is related to Denmark Tanny, and he tries to show off by sharing his artifacts. He takes her up to his study.
Rose (Caroline Arapoglou) catches up with Rafe (Drew Starkey) at the party and convinces him to do the deal. If they do the deal, the gold will be worked into the deal somehow, and finally, they will be able to start spending it legally.
Rose also promises that Sarah and Wheezie (Julia Antonelli) will be allowed to stay with him if he signs the deal. It’s clear Rafe is intrigued by the idea of having his family back together.
Upstairs, Wincloss shows Kie the documents that belonged to Denmark Tanny, including the scytale diagram and notes. She tries to take a picture, but he won’t let her. They’ll have to find a different way. Wincloss scoops up the documents and heads back down to the party, but Kiara sees where he put the key to the safe.
Outside, Kiara escapes Wincloss for a moment, and she tells John B and Sarah. John B creates a diversion, which allows Sarah to head to the study and get the pics, which she does.
Shortly after, Groff spikes Kiara’s drink with something, and John B gets fired.
Groff kidnaps Kiara and tries to kill her
Kiara has an immediate reaction to her drink. She stumbles away from Wincloss, not feeling well. Groff nearly scoops her up, but Rafe arrives and threatens Groff. Remember, Groff robbed him in season 4. Unfortunately, Topper (Austin North) arrives and drags Rafe away from Groff.
When the Pogues can’t find Kiara, they look to the water and see Groff throwing her unconscious body into a small boat and heading out.
Groff takes her to the middle of nowhere, ties her up to an anchor, and wakes up Kiara. Groff tells her that he was going to question her about what she found from Wincloss, but instead, he finds the photos. Now, he is ready to kill Kie. Then, he throws her off the boat because he is tired of her being a thorn in his side.
For a second, it looks like she’s really going to die.
John B saves Kiara’s life
Kiara looks up and thinks she sees JJ. Then, John B is there. He swims down and cuts her lose. They get her in the boat and do CPR. Thankfully, she wakes up!
In the morning, Kie is going through it. She thinks she saw and felt JJ when she was about to die.
The episode ends with Finch reciting the incantation to bring someone back from the dead.
We’re finally getting somewhere in Outer Banks season 5! I feel like this episode, like episode 6, felt like an old episode of Outer Banks. We didn’t quite get that early this season.
The Pogues teamed up on an incredibly risky heist to find key information about the Blue Crown and the scytale that will help them.
As it always does, the plan went completely wrong, and John B and the Pogues had to work together to save Kie. They get there just in time to save her life, and now, they have what they need to figure out the next phase of their plan to get the Blue Crown back.
Onto episode 8!
