Outer Banks season 5 episode 8, “The Runway Part 2,” is a callback to the eighth episode of the first season of the series. It’s one of the most important episodes in the show’s history.

In “The Runway,” Rafe (Drew Starkey) kills Sheriff Peterkin (Adina Porter) after John B (Chase Stokes) tries to rescue Sarah (Madelyn Cline) from Ward (Charles Esten) when he’s flying the gold from the Royal Merchant to the Bahamas.

In “The Runway Part 2,” there are some big things that happen on a runway, too!

The episode begins with the Pogues dropping off Kiara (Madison Bailey) at home after they rescued her after Groff (J. Anthony Crane) threw her overboard. Kie’s parents try to find Groff, but things get interesting.

Groff gives Shoupe the letter as evidence that Rafe killed Sheriff Peterkin

At Tannyhill, Groff sends the pictures of the scytale to Henrique, who is going to translate it for him. Rose (Caroline Arapoglou) tells Groff that Rafe has agreed to sign the paperwork after she pulled something at the party the night before. Groff asks her what she has on him, and she reveals it’s something that Ward wrote.

When Rose leaves to meet with Rafe and Dale (Jason Davis), Groff gets busy. He finds the code to the wallsafe behind the portrait of Denmark Tanny. He finds a bunch of cash, but more importantly, he finds the letter that Ward wrote that reveals that Rafe killed Sheriff Peterkin, the one that Rose is blackmailing Rafe with now.

Groff has an idea. In town, he heads to the sheriff's station, but he sees Kiara and her parents at the station talking with Shoupe. He knows that he’s in trouble now, so he pays a kid, and later double-crosses him, to take the letter to Shoupe (Cullen Moss).

Shoupe reads the letter and runs out. He finds the kid to figure out who gave him the letter, and the kid describes Groff.

Shoupe calls Rose into his office, and he questions her about the letter. Rafe is in trouble now!

Rose warns Rafe that Shoupe is going to arrest him

While Rafe is driving to the meeting to sign the papers, Rafe tries to make sure that Sofia (Fiona Palomo) is cool with the deal. She doesn’t quite understand why he has to do it, but he doesn’t tell her it’s because Rose is blackmailing him. Before they head in, Rafe proposes to Sofia again and gives the ring back. They kiss.

Shortly after, Rafe gets a call from Rose. She reveals that Groff gave Shoupe the letter, implicating him in Peterkin’s murder. Now, Rafe is wanted for the murder of Peterkin. She tells him to meet at the fish shack. Rafe speeds away with Sofia while Topper (Austin North) watches, stunned.

Around the island, the manhunt is on for Rafe, which is also complicating things for Groff, too, who is trying to lay low.

Rafe explains to Sofia that he has to leave. He is trying to save her, but Sofia won’t leave until he tells her what’s going on. Rafe finally explains that he has a warrant out for Sheriff Peterkin’s death. She wants him to turn himself in and fight it. Rafe knows he is screwed, so he wants her to get away.

Sofia isn’t leaving this time, though. She puts together a plan. They swap phones. Sofia is going to find him. She’s willing to put her life on the line for his right now. They kiss again, and then Rafe runs.

Pope and the Pogues make a new scytale and figure out where Finch is going with the Blue Crown

Meanwhile, Pope (Jonathan Daviss), John B, Cleo (Carlacia Grant), and Sarah are woodworking and crafting. They are building the scytale from scratch in order to decode it. Pope tells John B about the failed proposal, while Cleo tells Sarah about it. Cleo can’t understand why Pope is being so crazy. Sarah tries to offer some tips, but she reassures Cleo that she is Pope’s “ride or die.”

Back with the Pogues, they finish their version of the scytale. Pope starts translating. He realizes that they need to go to Lake Yas’m Be, which is located in modern-day Azerbaijan. It looks like the Pogues are going on another European adventure.

Hours later, Pope completes the translation: “To cross the bridge of earth, step to the Lake of Yas’m Be during the fire from the demon’s head.” Cleo remembers from her days on the boat that the demon’s head is a constellation, and the fire from the demon’s head is a meteor shower. The next one is happening in just a few days.

Now, the Pogues need to find a way to Azerbaijan immediately. They have a pilot, and they can make an escape.

Right then, Kiara shows up and reveals that the police are looking for Rafe because he’s in trouble.

The Pogues make a plan to leave for Azerbaijan with Rafe and Sofia

At the fish shack, Rose arrives with gold. Rafe tells her that he’s going to take her down with him for aiding and abetting. Sarah shows up, and she tells Rafe the plan to take the plan and leave the country. Rafe isn’t cool with it because he needs to get away now. He can’t wait. Finally, he comes around, but they don’t have a pilot.

Luckily, John B knows a guy. Rafe makes one last request. He wants Sofia to come, and Sarah is cool with it because she is.

Unfortunately, Sofia gets pulled over. Shoupe has her arrested, and this time, for the first time in his career, he is throwing the book at a criminal to hold them accountable. He arrests Sofia for aiding and abetting Rafe. Basically, he is using her to get Rafe to turn himself in.

Shortly after, John B and Sarah find a pilot to fly the plane at a bar. They throw some gold at him, and he’s in. It’s clear this dude has done this quite a few times before.

At Tannyhill, Groff sneaks back in looking for a gun. He opens the safe and finds one. Right then, Rose comes in and tells Wheezie what’s happening. Groff overhears everything. He knows Sarah and Rafe are leaving the country, and he wants to be on that plane.

The Pogues head to the runway

With the Pogues, John B tells Kiara that everyone understands if she doesn’t want to come. Kiara is down, like she always is, but she asks John B what they are going to do if they steal the Blue Crown back from Finch. He says that he plans to sell it unless Kiara wants to see if it works. She’s not totally down, but she’s totally still interested in bringing JJ back.

Before they leave, Pope apologizes to Cleo and tells her how he really feels. Then, it’s time to go catch a flight.

Unfortunately, things go from bad to worse pretty quickly. Groff finds Rafe at the fish shack, but so do the police. Rafe gets in a fight with the officer and leaves in a hurry. He steals the sheriff’s cruiser, but Groff meets him in the car. He pulls a gun on Rafe because he wants a ride on the plane to get the Blue Crown. Rafe fights off Groff and continues driving the car. Somehow, he knocks him out of the car, but the police still chase Rafe.

Finally, the Pogues arrive at the plane with the location information and the location to raise the dead, which gets Kie’s attention. Rafe arrives shortly after with the cops in pursuit, but Sofia isn’t there. Cleo takes the Twinkie to create a diversion.

It’s madness! They need to be on the plane right now.

Thankfully, Cleo makes it to the gated entrance, blows up the Twinkie, and stops the cops from getting through. Then, she rides a motorcycle to the plane. In the chaos, Sarah tells Rafe that they found their mom, Ellie.

Rafe chooses to stay behind to help Sofia

Before the plane leaves, Shoupe tells Rafe that Sofia is in jail. He knows that he can’t leave without her after everything they’ve been through. So, Rafe stays behind.

The rest of the Pogues get on the plane and take off. Well, most of them, anyway.

Cleo gets left behind on the runway as the plane takes off

Cleo still isn't on the plane when the pilot has to take off to outrun Shoupe.

Cleo tries to jump from the motorcycle to the plane. Pope catches her, but one of Shoupe’s deputies shoots from the car, misses Cleo, but it’s enough to get her to fall. Cleo is left on the runway as the plane takes off and heads to Azerbaijan.

Thankfully, Cleo is alive, but she gets arrested, while Rafe and Groff watch the plane leave the Outer Banks.

That’s where episode 8 ends with the Pogues on their way to Azerbaijan to steal the Blue Crown and bring back JJ.
