Outer Banks season 5 episode 9 begins with the Pogues flying into Azerbaijan to find the Blue Crown and bring JJ back from the dead.
They have one day to make all of that happen. Time is officially running out.
Back in the Outer Banks, Rafe (Drew Starkey) walks through the fields and trees until he finds a convenience store. He makes a quick disguise and changes clothes in the bathroom before he leaves.
He almost gets caught by a sheriff’s deputy, but the officer doesn’t recognize him.
The Pogues gather supplies to steal the Blue Crown
Somehow, the Pogues arrive in Azerbaijan, and John B (Chase Stokes) immediately finds a car to buy. They find the bridge that Finch (Jason Alan Carvell) is going to use to take to the lake.
Pope (Jonathan Daviss) puts together a plan to destroy the bridge, steal the Blue Crown from Finch, and still have enough time to take the Blue Crown to the lake and bring back JJ. They don’t say that, but we know that’s what is happening.
Then, they find everything they need at the market, including some weapons, guns, and enough materials to make an explosive.
Right then, the Corsairs show up. The Pogues run from Zac, one of the guys from Morrocco. A local woman helps them and takes a beating. Oh, I hope those dudes get what is coming to them.
Barry visits Sofia in jail
In the Outer Banks, Rafe makes it all the way back to Barry’s house. Finally, we get one last Barry (Nicholas Cirillo) and Rafe mess-around. I’m going to miss these two.
Rafe tells him that Sofia (Fiona Palomo) is in big trouble if he doesn’t turn himself in. He asks Barry to get a message to Sofia in jail. Rafe convinces Barry to go tell Sofia that he’s working on a way to get her out.
Barry meets with Sofia at the Sheriff's Office. They don’t have long, but in the five-minute conversation, she reveals that Rafe is going to get her out. He tells her to be ready.
Groff nearly kills Rose and steals all the Royal Merchant gold
On top of all that, Groff (J. Anthony Crane) is still just puttering around the Outer Banks in his little boat. It runs out of gas outside Tannyhill, and he has to row his boat to shore.
In the house, Rose (Caroline Arapoglou) tells Wheezie (Julia Antonelli) what happened with the plan and Rafe. They need to leave town immediately. Unfortunately, Groff finds them first.
Groff questions Rose about what she said to Shoupe (Cullen Moss). Rose lies, and Groff attacks her. He strangles her. Rose goes unconscious. It looks like she’s dead. Then, Wheezie walks into the room and finds Rose’s body.
Wheezie runs back upstairs, grabs a gun, and waits for Groff. When he tries to go into the room, Wheezie shoots him. He doesn’t die, but he’s definitely wounded. When he walks down the stairs, he finds that Rose isn’t actually dead.
Wheezie yells down that she called the cops, and Groff flees in Rose’s truck with all of the gold from the Royal Merchant in the back.
The Pogues steal the Blue Crown from Finch
Back in Azerbaijan, the Pogues put together their plan to take out the bridge and steal the Blue Crown. Sarah is going to be very far away while Pope blows up the mountainside and John B and Kie steal the Blue Crown. Simple enough, right?
Then, they go over the plan, and they all say they’re doing it “for JJ.” It’s so OBX. We are finally back!
As Finch and the small group of Corsairs approach the bridge, Sarah spots them. Everyone is in their places, and Pope gets the bomb ready. Of course, it doesn’t go according to plan. The bomb doesn’t go off, and Pope has to get creative. Finally, the bomb goes off, and he causes a massive rockslide.
It wipes out the entire bridge and knocks Finch’s cars into the water below. Kiara and John B pop out, steal the Blue Crown, and fight off the mercenaries.
Kiara tries to bring JJ back from the dead
John B tries to convince Kie to leave with the Blue Crown, but she doesn’t want to. She’s going to try to bring back JJ. John B sends her on her way while he tries to hold them off.
Back in the Outer Banks, Cleo (Carlacia Grant) is deported and forbidden from entering the United States again, which is exactly what Pope was worried about.
The mercenaries keep chasing Kie through the mountainous terrain. She finally makes it to the lake and finds the right spot just at the right time. Now, all that’s left is saying the right words.
Kie starts to recite the incantation to bring JJ back. “Arise, JJ, Arise,” she says during the Perseids meteor shower. At first, it seems like it doesn’t work. Then, she does it again. It seems like it doesn’t work at first, but then, it does!
Kiara sees some kind of meteor zooming across the night’s sky, and it brings back all the memories of JJ from when they were kids. She remembers the many times that JJ said, “When bad things happen, you just got to let it go.” In Kiara’s mind, JJ is telling her to let it go. Then, she remembers all the happy memories she shared with him as a couple, as friends, and beyond.
Kiara begs for him to stay, but she realizes that he can’t. The Blue Crown doesn’t really bring the dead all the way back. It breaks away the veil that keeps the living and the dead apart.
Pope rescues Kiara from the Corsairs
Then, John B reunites with Pope and Sarah. He tells them that Finch and the Corsairs are ahead of them.
Finch and the Corsairs find Kie at the lake. Finch is not happy after Kie’s betrayal. He wants to know if it worked, and Kiara says yes, but not in the way he thinks. Dalia wants to kill Kiara quickly and move along, but Finch wants to know more. Kiara tells him that it wasn’t a dream.
Finch is still going to kill her, but luckily, Pope and the gang arrive just in time. Pope fires warning shots at Finch. John B tells the Corsairs that they are surrounded by 15 guys with assault rifles and grenades, which sends the group fleeing with the Blue Crown.
When the Corsairs are gone, the Pogues reunite with Kiara. They all hug it out.
As the narrator, John B explains that they don’t know if the Blue Crown worked, but he knows that Kiara remembered what she had with JJ, and that was more than what she had lost.
One mission is down, but there’s still one to go. The Pogues got the Blue Crown, and they gave it up after Kie got the closure she needed. The episode ends with Groff enjoying his stolen gold at Blackstone. Now, the Pogues have one more thing to do: steal the gold back from Groff.
We’ll see if it happens in the Outer Banks series finale. That’s up next!
