Elmo from the beloved children's program Sesame Street had quite an unexpected interaction with Curb Your Enthusiasm comedian Larry David last week. For those who are unaware, this all began when Elmo decided to take to Twitter to post a rather harmless and selfless tweet:

What unfolded was a plethora of responses, most of them far from positive or uplifting. From Funko to RITZ Crackers, even The Walking Dead responded.

The moment no one saw coming

All the same, Elmo's caring tweet resonated with many. Later that same week, Elmo alongside his dad Louie, was interviewed on NBC's Today Show, about his tweet and the importance of mental health.

All seemed well until, Larry David, waiting to be interviewed, decided to approach Elmo and "throttled" him. In the video below you can see David does this twice, while also seemingly taking and missing a swing at Louie, maybe?

The father-son duo were able to compose themselves and this moment will forever be engrained as one of television's wildest, unscripted moments. Let's be honest, this will be one of television's top moments of 2024.

To be fair, David did apologize to Elmo after the incident, even if the apology seemed far from honest. But what compelled him to do it, especially to Elmo of all people?

Why Larry, why?

Well, according to the comedian on Late Night with Seth Meyers, he simply couldn't handle Elmo talking about mental health. In David's words, in a high-pitched Elmo-sounding voice. "Oh, my God, oh, my God. I don't think I can take another second of this."

As for the internet's response to this event, which was, keep in mind, on live TV, it was a mixed bag. Some found the incident hilarious, others terrible and some had no reaction to it at all.

The final season of Curb Your Enthusiasm aired season 12, episode 1 on February 4. You can watch the final season on MAX.
