At the 75th Annual Primetime Emmy Awards, the Television Academy is celebrating television throughout the years with tributes to hit shows from over the years, Among the shows spotlighted is Grey's Anatomy with current cast members Ellen Pompeo (Meredith Grey), James Pickens Jr. (Richard Webber), and Chandra Wilson (Miranda Bailey) joining former costars Katherine Heigl (Izzie Stevens) and Justin Chambers (Alex Karev) for the first time at the Emmys in years.

While Grey's Anatomy hasn't competed at the Emmys for years, the show was once a mainstay at the annual event picking up a slew of nominations during its early seasons including a handful of Emmy wins.

Katherine Heigl won an Emmy for Grey's Anatomy in 2007

Over the years, Grey's Anatomy's cast was nominated several times in the acting races at the Emmys but only one key member of the core ensemble was ever recognized for their performance on the show. That honor goes to Katherine Heigl who won the Emmy for Outstanding Supporting Actress In A Drama Series at the 2007 Emmys.

At the event, Heigl bested her Grey's costars Sandra Oh and Chandra Wilson as well as Lorrane Bracco (The Sopranos), Rachel Griffiths (Brothers & Sisters), and Aida Turturro (The Sopranos) to win the Emmy. Heigl was shocked by the win saying in her acceptance speech that even her mother didn't think she had a chance of winning as she joked that she didn't have anything prepared.

A year later, Heigl opted not to submit herself to the Emmy race in what turned out to be a scandalous moment. At the time, the move was seen as a slight against the show's writers but Heigl has since reflected on the decision telling ET in 2016 the issue wasn't with the writing but rather she didn't believe her performance in the season was as strong as during the previous season for which she won her Emmy.

"I didn't feel good about my performance," she explained to ET, clarifying it wasn't an issue with the writing. "There was a part of me that thought, because I had won the year before, that I needed juicy, dramatic, emotional material. And I just didn't have that that season."

Grey's Anatomy won 5 Emmys over the years

The biggest win for Grey's Anatomy over the years was Katherine Heigl's Emmy victory in the Best Supporting Actress race; however, it wasn't the show's only win. In total, Grey's Anatomy won five Emmys including a win for Loretta Devine for her performance as Adele Webber when she was awarded the Emmy for Outstanding Guest Actress In A Drama Series back in 2011.

Grey's Anatomy also took home several wins in the creative Emmy races including Outstanding Makeup For A Single-Camera Series (Non-Prosthetic), Outstanding Casting for a Drama Series, and Outstanding Prosthetic Makeup For A Series, Miniseries, Movie Or A Special.
