Who would have thought that in just 5 episodes, the Yu Yu Hakusho live-action adaptation on Netflix could not only tell a compelling story but do so in ways audiences don't see very often. Based on the manga and anime series released in the 90s, Yu Yu Hakusho, tells the tale of how Yusuke Urameshi becomes a Spirit Detective for the Spirit World.

After dying in an accident saving the life of a little boy, Yusuke learns about the Spirit World. Upon receiving a second chance, he becomes tasked with stopping demons who have escaped from the Demon World.

In the process, Yusuke's rival Kuwabara harnesses his spirit energy and with his help, along with demons Kurama and Hiei, the group tries to stop rich business owner Sakyo and rescue a Korime and Yusuke's friend Keiko. But the rescue will be far from easy with the likes of the all-powerful Toguro brothers standing in their way.

Along the way, Yusuke trains with Genkai, makes new friends, and gains a new understanding of the world around him while discovering more about himself than he ever expected. But for those who are not familiar with the original source material, you are in luck.

Want to know where you can watch the Yu Yu Hakusho anime?

The anime, which consists of 112 episodes, is available to watch on Crunchyroll. Viewers have the option to watch both the subbed and dubbed versions.

Considering the live-action version was only 5 episodes long, you can imagine that Yusuke's story is not as simple and concise. Before he can even face Toguro for the first time, he must learn to control his spirit energy, face a wide variety of demons, and cope with the fact that nothing is as it seems.

Yusuke isn't the only character audiences will learn about, as Kurama's story including his difficult past, Hiei's connection and persistence to rescue his younger sister, Kuwabara's path to strength and love, and even Koenma's understanding of humans, all create a compelling story. In a world where anime, especially ones that fit this genre of the supernatural and paranormal, are extremely saturated, Yu Yu Hakusho is a must-watch.

Make time this winter to watch the anime and enjoy the live-action adaptation on Netflix.
