The three-episode premiere of Reacher season 4 set the stage for what’s to come. And it left on a fairly massive cliffhanger as yet another suspect took themselves off the board, literally. That’s what happened when Cahill (Chris Owens) walked off the roof to close the third episode.
As we pick up with episode 4, “Karambits and Pieces,” it’s about trying to put the giant puzzle together.
The real story
With Cahill gone, Reacher (Alan Ritchson) turns his attention back to Congressman Sampson (Marc Blucas). They served together, and, despite his grief, Reacher believes Sampson to be an honorable man. After clearing time with the local authorities, the two head to a neighborhood bar for a discussion. Without violating his oath or conscience, Sampson is prepared to lay out what he knows about his time overseas and Cahill.
Sampson helped to train the general that committed war crimes. But that all came after he had gone home. His work was part of a typical exchange between the United States and other countries. Sampson fulfilled his role, while Cahill worked on another part of the mission. He has no idea what evidence could be used to blackmail him, but he knows that if Anna Merrick (Karen Kwong-Chip) took it, there could be something sensitive on it.
As they wrap up their discussion, Sampson has a request for Reacher. He asks Reacher to find the drive, just as Lila (Agnez Mo) had before. And Reacher makes the same promise — he’ll find it, he’ll look at it, and then he’ll decide what to do with it. Reacher won’t be bought or swayed by anyone. But he is still a man on a mission.
What’s on the drive
Meanwhile, Green (Sydelle Noel) is closing in on finding out what Anna took. They found her other secret office; they just need a way in. Along with Jacob (Christopher Rodriguez Marquette), they form an elaborate plan to snag a card from someone else at the site. It works, and Green is able to use it to gain entry.
Once inside, Green pretends to be Anna’s replacement and gets a little training. Turns out it’s a site where they are working to digitize secure records. She gets to Anna’s station and learns more about what Anna did. It seems she digitized a file, moved it to a drive, deleted it from the server, and destroyed the physical record. That meant she had a file that no longer existed, making it extremely valuable.
And it turns out she was being blackmailed for the file and was operating on a deadline. Her son was taken in order to coax her into action. It was when she realized he was dead that she ended up killing herself. But likely not before mailing it to someone — likely Lila.
Fighting the power
Before Reacher can get to Lila, the CIA catches up with him. That forces him to spring into action again, taking the team out as before. But he’s convinced that another team will be after Lila. He knows that what they have is very dangerous. So, Reacher makes his way to her, but before he can get there, she is confronted.
A gang is waiting for Lila and Amisha (Anggun) when they arrive at the hotel. Their security team is dead, and it seems like they’re in trouble. But that’s when Lila and Amisha turn the tables. They draw out some big knives and go to work. By the time Reacher arrives, the ladies are gone, and the CIA team is dead. He gets there just ahead of the police — who take him into custody to end the episode.
It provides us with one big clue. Turns out that both Ben Merrick and the Only Fans model were killed with a big, elaborate knife. And Reacher recognizes the wounds on the men he finds that Lila and Amisha dispatched. Could it be that the ladies were blackmailing Anna, not trying to gain blackmail on Sampson? Could they be the ones that killed Ben?
We’ve had a lot of twists and turns in just four episodes. And we’ve seen a lot of sequences where Reacher is forced into action. I like the pace of the plot, and I’m intrigued by the mystery as I suspect there are more twists — and a bigger truth — yet to come.
