The Small Prophets premiere showed it’s a comedy based on an affable lead character and a wild premise.

A normal man is trying to find answers about his missing love. So, he turns to a radical solution—growing Homunculi — to get those answers. But by the end of last week’s two-episode premiere, he appeared to be well on his way.

In Small Prophets episode 3, “Should I Be Scared,” the circle of knowledge grows. Let’s dive in.

Making progress

As we kick off, Michael (Pearce Quigley) is making progress. At least, he’s making partial progress. Three of the six jars have a figure, meaning at least a few of them took. Now it’s about keeping it going, and his father (Michael Palin) has some thoughts and suggestions. Michael takes those all to heart and continues on this journey. He needs to find out what happened to Clea.

He also gets some disturbing news that Roy (Paul Kaye) visited his father. So, Michael calls and leaves a message asking Roy to stay away. When Roy tries calling back, Michael ignores him. He misses the message, too, that Roy wasn’t the one who visited. But that leaves Roy wondering who is trying to impersonate him.

Roy is wandering when he comes across Bea (Kathryn Drysdale). She claims to have been Clea’s friend and asks some questions. But her probing, combined with Michael’s message, has Roy on edge. So, he offers some misleading answers. He’s now suspicious of who this woman is and what she might want with his missing sister and her business.

A deepening friendship

Meanwhile, Michael is moving closer to having a social circle. He has a building friendship with Kayce (Lauren Patel). They have a good back-and-forth at work and have begun sharing their lives. When she has a tough day, it’s Michael who steps in to help. He listens to her struggles and offers some gentle advice.

But it turns out, she hasn’t forgotten about his admission. In the fog of drink and constant humiliation, Michael shared his plan to grow Homunculi. So, she’s naturally curious about the process. After some back-and-forth, he agrees to let her see them. So, she arrives to take a look at what Michael is growing in his shed.

It’s fairly clear that Kayce, while interested, doesn’t really believe Michael’s tale. So, when he pulls back the curtain, taps on the jar, and a creature appears, she is thrown. She screams and heads out, which leads to her and Michael having a discussion outside. He explains more about them and answers her questions. When Kayce calms down a bit, she’s ready to go back and take a look.

Now with a calm Kayce by his side, Michael pulls back the curtain again. He taps on the jars and reveals the three creatures growing. Kayce has some more questions and wants to know why Michael is doing this. He admits that he needs answers about Clea, and this is his last resort. But he shares it could be a chance for her to get answers, too.

Spies among us

Kayce isn’t the only one in on the secret. Since the pilot, Michael has had to deal with his nosy neighbor, Clive (Jon Pointing). Clive seems to mostly want Michael to clean up his eye-sore of a property. But he’s taken to spying on Michael, which is something that his wife, Bev (Sophie Willan), isn’t too keen on. She chides Clive about his spying.

When Kayce and Michael are having a heated argument in the garden, Bev can’t help but take a look. As the two head back inside, Bev keeps up her vigil. It isn’t long before Michael cracks the blinds, which gives Bev a view into the shed. There, floating in a jar, she sees one of the prophets.

The prophets are growing, but will they provide the expected result? And what will come of Michael’s neighbor being in on the secret? How much truth can these prophets provide, and how many will want their wisdom? It’s clear there is about to be some drama, especially as Roy tries to uncover who is probing around the edges of Clea’s life.
