Sugar season 2 has been about a journey. John Sugar (Colin Farrell) has struggled with who he is now that his people are gone. He’s struggled with who outed them, forcing them to leave. And he’s struggled with what he’s had to do to keep his word to a new client.
All those things come to a head in the Sugar season 2 finale, “Like Sugar,” where he faces a lot of demons and an old ghost.
Cold Open
We drop into a spot in the desert in the past. It’s labeled Site 22 in Chile, and there a woman (Mireille Enos) is doing research. She appears to be using four floating orbs to grow crops in a hostile environment. Given what Sugar learned from Stanley (Bernard White) in episode 7, this seems to connect to what led to his people leaving. But who is this woman?
It's Djen, Sugar’s sister, and as she finds the breakthrough with the crops, clearly proving her research, we see Henry (Jason Butler Harner) arrive. That means that whatever led to Sugar’s people leaving is connected to the disappearance of his sister, but how?
The new normal
Meanwhile, Sugar is still struggling with what he did. He tries to connect with Charlotte (Laura Donnelly), who is busy. She suggests he head to a movie, but instead he goes to an underground fight club. Somehow betting beat-up makes it easier. As he recovers, he also looks at some visions of home and the people he’s lost. But much of moving forward is about the people he’s helped and the people who are left.
Despite how he feels about the ending with Vega (Tony Dalton), the results speak for themselves. With Vega off the board and the evidence in Ji Moon’s (Raymond Lee) possession, he’s able to break up the criminal ring. Many in the sheriff's department and other law enforcement and government sectors are held accountable. It helps some.
Sugar is also investing in his friends. He heads to a doctor’s appointment with Tom (Shea Whigham). He’s supporting those who are still in his life. He goes to Danny Moon’s (Jin Ha) next fight, happily seeing the brothers together and doing well. And he continues to work with Val (Sasha Calle). He’s built a new support system that helps. But it’s all about to change, yet again.
The real Charlotte
When Sugar does connect with Charlotte, it’s a magical evening. That is until she makes a reference to all his people being gone. She realizes the slip as it happens, as does Sugar. He knows that something is up, leaving Charlotte to make a call and reveal to her boss that her cover is blown.
Sugar follows a lead, hoping to get to the bottom of what’s happening with Senator Pavich. He believes Pavich is the key to what happened to his people. He’s right, but he’s also wrong. Charlotte is there to welcome him in. But it isn’t Pavich who is pulling her strings—it’s Djen. As it turns out, he’s not only alive but still on Earth.
Worse yet, she makes clear that her research bore fruit and it changed her perspective. She didn’t feel their people were following the right path when it came to Earth, so it was Djen, from hiding, who outed their people, forcing them to leave. She wanted to reach out to Sugar, but it wasn’t the right time. Now, there was no choice.
She soon heads out for a big reveal. She’s perfected her technology to be able to control the weather. That has the potential to vastly change the world. But Sugar is still reeling from this reveal and from what Djen has done. He doesn’t have much time to dwell. Quickly, Charlotte reappears and drugs Sugar. As he’s passing out, she shares that their relationship was real to her and was the real her. She shares it wasn’t part of the plan, but she couldn’t resist him.
When Sugar wakes up, Djen and everyone else is gone. She tells him he’ll find her when he’s ready. Sugar is forced to mull what that means as he finds a way to move forward. He reconnects with Jonathan Siegel (James Cromwell), who knows his secret but has no plans to reveal it. He sees Sugar as a friend, and he’s come bearing a gift—the return of Sugar’s dog.
So, Sugar is ready to carry on. He has his old friend. He has his new friends. He has his work. And as he walks out the door, the light on his communicating device begins blinking…
The alien of it all has always been a tough nut to crack with Sugar, but re-introducing Djen and having a twist in the story makes it more interesting. Overall, I thought the second season was compelling. It kept a lot of what I liked from the first season and built on the story to the point where I’m excited to see where it will go.
