We’ve been on a journey in Ted Lasso season 4. We started with finding a way to get Ted (Jason Sudeikis) back to Richmond, this time to shepherd the women’s team, but it hasn’t been smooth sailing for the team, either.
Much like with the men’s team once upon a time, Ted is having to work his magic to make them a cohesive unit. That continues this week as he tries to get them all on the same page. The fourth episode of the season, “Greyhounds’ Day Off,” shows there is work to be done to get them to bond.
Battling for team harmony
Ted’s first battle is that, as a man coaching a women’s team, he can’t just walk into the locker room. It creates issues for Ted and Coach Beard (Brendan Hunt), especially when they hear fighting in the locker room and Coach Chilton (Tanya Reynolds) isn’t around. It becomes clear when entering the locker room that the lady Greyhounds have an issue with cliques.
Ted is hopeful things will resolve themselves. But as we learn through our intro—where Trent Crimm (James Lance) is interviewing Dr. Sharon (Sarah Niles)—cliques can spell doom for a team. So, when it’s clear there are still cliques during practice the following day, Ted realizes he has a problem. But how to solve it?
As Ted, Beard, and Chilton are at the pub, they learn that Mae (Annette Badlam) is bringing back trivia night. Beard is pleased, but Ted files it away. When fighting breaks out in the locker room again the next day, Ted has a solution. He cancels practice for the following day and tells the team they’ll be attending trivia night. The twist is they will be placed on random teams.
The ladies aren’t pleased, but they relent. And Beard is pleased to be on a team with Ted and Chilton—where he is dominating until encountering a poster featuring his ex-girlfriend in the bathroom. It puts him in a catatonic state that allows some of the other teams to thrive. One of those teams is filled with players.
The problem is their chief rival is a team full of rowdy fans. When the girls win, and the fans accuse them of cheating, things get out of hand quickly. A fight breaks out and the team, unified, makes sure to dispatch justice. They all end up in jail—including Ted, Beard, and Chilton—but the cliques are gone. Ted’s gambit worked, albeit different from how he expected. The moment brings the team together as they prepare to face Chelsea.
Roy and Keeley
We’ve been dancing around the Roy (Brett Goldstein) and Keeley (Juno Temple) of it all for a few episodes. Finally, as they have an exchange, Roy poses the question — is it time for them to get back together?
While a very uncomfortable Higgins (Jeremy Swift) is caught in the middle, they go back and forth. Ultimately, Keeley doesn’t think Roy has had enough relationships since they were together for it to work. She pushes him to go on 10 dates first.
Like with everything, Roy is goal-oriented. He begins stacking dates — often several in a night — in order to satisfy Keeley’s request. But he’s not taking it seriously. That is until a dalliance with the bar tender that ends with him in pain as his knee acts up and earns him a trip to the hospital.
A funny thing happens when he meets his new doctor (Sophia Barclay). They hit it off, and some sparks fly as she pushes back on Roy and his typical schtick. By the end of the visit, Roy is asking for her number. His singular focus on Keeley seems to have waned, which could lead him on a new journey.
We’re starting to settle into a good rhythm. It’s good to have Ted back, of course. I’m enjoying his work with the team.
We’re starting to get to know some of the players, and I’m interested to see that continue moving forward. It’s nice to have Roy, Keeley, Higgins, and Rebecca (Hannah Waddingham) back, as well. I like the flow of the season, and I’m curious to see where it’s all going.
