Much of the action of Ted Lasso season 4 has been off the pitch. As we get going on episode 8, “Follow the Anger,” the focus is on the pitch.
Overall, things are looking good on the pitch — until they aren’t. It’s about the aftermath and personal growth as we launch into our stories in the new episode.
Greyhounds on fire
In the opening montage, the Greyhounds are surging. The introduction of the Believe poster coupled with the challenge of adding additional goals has inspired the ladies. They are dominating on the pitch and making a run in the standings. They are gelling as a team and looking good, and Gemma (Abbie Hern) is leading the way.
In their game, the Greyhounds are up big. They are starting to pull starters, and Gemma is due to come off. But she asks to remain, setting her sights on a hat trick. The coaches — including Alice (Tanya Reynolds) — decide to let her try. As happens so often in sports, it doesn’t take long for that to turn out to be a mistake. Gemma hurts her knee, collapsing on the field. Now, the extent of her injury is unknown.
Rebecca (Hannah Waddingham) tries to find a doctor to see her quickly and sends a gift basket, but Alice is the one who goes to visit. Gemma has an opportunity as a lawyer, and in the wake of her injury, she’s considering pushing that way. When Gemma tells Alice she might not come back, Alice doesn’t know how to handle it.
Alice spends some time reflecting. She’s never been good at sharing her feelings, but that’s what it’s going to take to convince Gemma that she belongs on the field. It seems to work. Gemma is committed to recovery and getting on the field again. And Dr. Beaumont (Laura Haddock) is there to make sure she gets the chance.
Shares being sold
Meanwhile, Higgins (Jeremy Swift) discovers a problem. He notices that several shareholders have recently made sales. He begins investigating to see why but quickly finds that no one wants to answer his call or his question. He gets enough to know that someone is pressuring people to sell, but he’s not sure who.
So, Higgins heads to the pub for some answers. Mae (Annette Badlam) intercepts his attempt but quietly redirects him. She doesn’t want to be seen to be snitching but suggests that Higgins needs to follow the anger. Who is angry enough to make a secret play?
That leads Higgins to only one conclusion — Rupert is trying to find a way to steal the team out from under Rebecca.
Roy and Keeley get back together
Meanwhile, there is still tension between Roy (Brett Goldstein) and Keeley (Juno Temple). Keeley realized she’s still in love with Roy but thinks she’s lost him. So, she’s not keen to accompany him to his special ceremony at Chelsea, but she doesn’t know that Roy broke up with Dr. Beaumont.
Roy knows that he loves Keeley, but he doesn’t know how to express it. He turns to Ted (Jason Sudeikis) for some advice, deciding it’s not about finding the perfect time but expressing the right sentiment. So, the pair heads off for the event and things remain awkward.
It gets even more awkward as they have transportation issues. Roy’s new car is a challenge, and quickly, they’re stranded. They move to the tube, but Roy is a bit apprehensive about enclosed spaces. When the tube breaks down, it does little to assuage his fears. Worse yet, they’re late and miss Roy’s ceremony. They arrive just as things are wrapping up, but Keeley pushes Roy to give his speech anyway.
Roy starts out talking about his playing career. He soon remembers Ted’s advice and switches gears. He professes his love for Keeley, and she’s ready to hear it. They are officially back together, having grown a bit and ready to make the most of this new shot at love.
We knew it wouldn’t be long before Rebecca’s old nemesis returned. It makes sense that Rupert would be trying to ruin her success, and I suspect we’ll see him before the season is out. The question is whether he’s working alone.
I suspect there might be more to it, but for now, it’s enough to have Roy and Keeley back together and the team moving in the right direction. I can’t wait to see where we go from here.
