Going into the second half of The Diplomat season 4, the hits just continue coming for the Penn-Wyler administration. Once Hal revealed the truth about the Poseidon weapon to Trowbridge, a series of unfortunate events then spiraled, including Kate dropping some blackmail on the Prime Minister, leading to his unexpected resignation. Where does the administration go from here?

The Diplomat season 4 episode 5 kicks off with Hal asking Kate if she's been eating and sleeping, which she hasn't been. She's blaming herself for Trowbridge's resignation, and she's still worried about who will be his replacement. Kate greets Todd on the tarmac as he deplanes and arrives in the UK for his sabbatical. They're teaming up on appearances as they await an announcement.

Stuart informs Kate the new PM position is down to Thixton and Vaughn, two choices Kate isn't excited about. Kate asks their driver to pull the car over. She runs into the field on the side of the road and throws up. When Kate and Todd arrive at Winfield, Stuart rushes in with the news that Thixton, who no one wanted to win, withdrew for giving money to Russia. Vaughn is the new PM.

The new Prime Minister ices out Kate

It's an immediate relief for Kate, who is finally able to eat. Kate and Todd plan their itinerary with Stuart, which ends with Stuart putting his foot in his mouth by offhandedly saying "dodged a bullet." Meanwhile, Hal and Grace meet with Billie and Ganon about announcing a legacy ship ban much to Ganon's frustration. Back in the UK, Todd asks Kate for a job that keeps him away from Grace.

Todd appears to be looking into working in London since Kate already has Secret Service detail. He proposes being a special envoy, which Kate says could be a number of things. He opens up to her about how difficult things have been for him since Grace's shooting and how she's acted toward him. After dinner, Kate calls Hal to finally express her annoyance about Todd moving to Winfield.

But she's in a situation where she has to be supportive of Todd's idea. Grace steals the phone from Hal to thank Kate for getting Vaughn in office. In turn, Kate hands the phone to Todd, but Grace ends the call within seconds. The next day, Eidra briefs Kate before Kate settles Eidra and Stuart's different answers to HR about moving in together. Clearly, they still haven't figured it out.

Kate and Todd meet with the new Prime Minister Bethan Vaughn (Jodie Whittaker). Todd quickly excuses himself as Kate and Vaughn get down to business, but they have limited time. Before Kate can get Vaughn to talk about Russia, she's escorted out while Vaughn takes a phone call. Once Kate's gone, it's revealed Vaughn was faking the call. Kate made no progress.

Before long, they're realizing that Vaughn might not have been the better option for PM. She's already started fighting people. Todd calls Grace and asks if there's a possibility that Kate's pregnant since he's seen her vomiting a lot. He also reveals that Vaughn didn't want to "talk shop" with Kate. Meanwhile, Kate picks up on the fact Vaughn has been firing people with relationships with the US.

Kate's life and job are made harder by Todd

Grace, Hal, Billie, and Ganon continue their meeting, which has gone on so long, Grace is no longer interested and relays Kate's strike-out with Vaughn to Hal while Ganon's talking. Billie gets their attention, but Grace immediately turns her head back to Hal to ask about the possible pregnancy. Hal leaves the room to call Kate and tells her Todd told Grace he thinks she's pregnant.

Kate also learns that Todd ran his mouth about Vaughn icing her out, and both Wylers are not on board with Todd becoming a special envoy. She seethes as she watches Todd get fitted for a suit. After helping him make a decision on his suit, she carefully brings up the topic of him calling Grace with updates when he shouldn't be. She curtly tells him that she has reflux, which makes her vomit.

Hal asks Grace about the situation with Kate and Todd. Apparently, Grace planted the idea with Todd's detail in order to get him thinking about a move to the UK. She wanted Kate to "manage" him. Across oceans and time zones, this quartet is quickly becoming dysfunctional. Kate meets with Robyn Palmer to clear the air and extend her help. Again, she's being iced out.

After another unfortunate meeting, Kate informs Hal that she's essentially in timeout for "toppling" Trowbridge. She's not being trusted. Kate calls out Hal for suggesting for coercive tactics to demand loyalty like a dictatorship. He denies that and says she just needs to remind Vaughn they're on the same side. Later that night, Kate and Todd attend an event together.

Todd causes Kate to accidentally leak classified information

When Kate spots Vaughn's arrival, she makes beeline to take her aside for a conversation. She offers an apology and an explanation of why she unveiled the secret about Trowbridge and Roylin. Vaughn expresses that she understands Kate's position, even if it doesn't seem genuine. Kate brings up Russia and her concern that Vaughn was casting her aside because of Trowbridge.

Vaughn explains that she was simply thinking before she spoke with Kate about Russia, which she's ready to do now. She tells Kate that Russia located the submarine and have asked to retrieve the bodies of the dead. That would mean Russia would discover that Poseidon is missing. She didn't say no because the UK wouldn't be at risk of retaliation. Kate realizes the implications for the US.

After having a disagreement (again) about where they will live together, Stuart walks out on Eidra and takes his work and wine upstairs. Todd drops in on Kate as she preps her notes to call Grace. He asks to sit in, which she turns down, even when he says he'll just hear it from Grace. Fed up, she tells him again that she's not pregnant. She spews the truth and through the open door, Frances hears it all.
