The Diplomat season 4 is hurtling toward its final episode, and Kate's unfortunately hurtling down a total breakdown with the pressure closing in on her. In the previous episode, Kate tried to repair her already fraught relationship with the new Prime Minister while also essentially babysitting the First Gentleman. She ended up spilling the truth to him, which was leaked through her office's open door.

The Diplomat season 4 episode 6 begins with Grace, Hal, Ganon, and Billie video chatting with Kate about Vaughn inviting the Russian's to retrieve their submarine and learning that the US stole their weapon. While everyone throws out options, Grace instructs Kate to let Vaughn know she can either call off the Russians or Grace will "send warships to do it for her." With that, she leaves the table.

Kate's terrified that Grace is effectively threatening to start a war, but she has no choice but to tell the PM she made a bad call on her first day and to fix it. After the call, Kate shares a drink with Todd and clears the air about everything she told him. They disagree on Grace's motives for making big moves, and Todd worries that he doesn't have a way in to understand her anymore. He's lost.

Todd's security clearance increases for better or worse

Stuart and Eidra bicker about their relationship in the morning, stemming from Eidra casually proposing they get married for the sake of convenience. At this point, it's not even obvious that they even like each other anymore and why they are insistent on making each other miserable. Stuart says his piece about marriage and leaves for work (and Eidra speechless in her kitchen).

Billie informs Grace that Kate wants to increase Todd's clearance in order to read him in on things happening in the UK about the submarine. She believes Todd can be helpful, which Grace clearly doubts when she asks "How?" Billie explains that Todd's hearing things out of context, and Grace decides to give it a shot. Todd now has clearance to top secret information.

The next day, Kate tells Todd she got him higher clearance. He's doubtful that he should have higher clearance, but she wants to lean on him and his insights with so much going on. Frances takes Stuart all the way upstairs to her office and reveals that she overheard Kate telling Todd that she blackmailed Trowbridge. Stuart tries to pull Kate aside at the office, but she's swamped.

He's unsettled by Kate reading Todd in and taking him to the SCIF to talk with Eidra. A lot is happening very quickly. Kate relays the options Grace laid out for Vaughn to Eidra. Todd and Eidra react the same way to hearing "warships." A blockade would cause a big mess. Hal raises the same concerns about the warships to Billie, who tries to remain coolheaded. Grace is pushing Billie out, too.

Stuart and Eidra learn the truth about Kate's blackmail

Kate explains to Todd that her job is to relay messages for the president but also provide warnings if those messages could harm her host country. She also explains that she doesn't have a great track record of re-litigating these matters with Grace. Kate presents Todd as an option to weigh in with Grace, which he quickly turns down. Stuart pulls Kate out for a conversation.

Unfortunately, he has to talk to her about what Frances overheard regarding blackmailing Trowbridge. While Kate handles this conversation, Todd calls Grace and mentions the warships. He asks her to send him somewhere else where he will actually be useful. Grace admits she wants Todd in London because she wants to send a message that she's not scared of the people who shot her.

Apparently, Todd thinks he needs to be Grace's eyes and ears, and she tells him to be "everything." Stuart goes to Eidra's office, where she has set up sticky notes and a fan to stand in for flowers for her real yet tentative marriage proposal. They have a year to either split or get engaged, which they agree on with a kiss. Stuart turns up the music to tell Eidra about Kate blackmailing Trowbridge.

Todd catches up later with Kate announcing his official special envoy position and pushes Kate to share the warship plan with Vaughn. Suddenly, Kate realizes she's gotten herself into a tricky situation. In the morning, Kate has an awkward moment with Frances before meeting with Stuart and Eidra. The vibe here is awkward as well. Kate knows what's up.

Kate makes a bold decision for her country

They take their meeting in a different room and Kate warns Eidra to stop her if it sounds like treason while she explains things to Stuart. She rolls into her explanation about the Poseidon, reading Stuart into the situation. Eidra asks if she's sure, and Kate simply continues. She confirms the blackmail, but she's not finished with her explanation. Kate also tells Stuart that Grace ordered the previous attack.

With everything out on the table, Kate asks Stuart and Eidra if she's become complicit in a "culture of consistent lawlessness" and she's become blind to it. She asks Stuart point blank if the threat Grace wants her to make to the PM is over the line, and he and Eidra both confirm it is. They need to keep Todd out of the meeting or he will deliver the threat. Eidra tells Kate to go tonight.

Stuart sets up a night at the symphony for Todd to give Kate a chance to meet with Vaughn without him. Eidra accompanies her to the meeting with the Prime Minister and posts up in a common room while Kate and Vaughn talk in an office. Vaughn explains that she has no option but to agree to allow Russia to gather their dead because they would come regardless and find Poseidon gone.

Kate proposes that the US and/or UK retrieved the dead and tell them that for the safety of Europe, they're entombing the submarine. That's not a bad option, but Vaughn turns it down because she doesn't trust the US. No matter what Kate says, Vaughn keeps shooting her down. While briefing with the whole team later, Kate reveals that she delivered the threat and Vaughn called Russia off.
