After a two-year wait, The Gentlemen is finally back with its highly anticipated second season. Eddie Horniman (Theo James) and Susie Glass (Kaya Scodelario) are the dynamic duo we have been excited to see back on our screens, especially after they solidified their alliance in the first season finale. But are they prepared for the next chapter of expanding their business?
The Gentlemen season 2 episode 1 begins with Eddie crawling on the ground, very banged up and unable to walk. While wriggling through a vast field, he happens upon a note that reads "Follow the X." Clearly, in three months' time, things will be taking a turn for the worse. Three months before his unfortunate debacle, Eddie expresses to Geoff (Vinnie Jones) his desire to get the entire estate back.
Meanwhile, Susie and Jack (Harry Goodwins) are at the hangar that the business has bought as another underground weed farm and a means to clean money. They are also mirroring their business model underneath other massive estates in Italy. Francesco "Cico" Maldini (Michele Morrone), their Italian connection, arrives with Contessa Isabella "Bella" Soranza de Parme (Benedetta Porcaroli).
Cico brings Eddie and Susie a major Moretti problem
Eddie has breakfast with his family and Lord Hawthorne (Hugh Bonneville), which gets interrupted by Cico and his chaotic energy. Hawthorne takes a particular liking to Jack as Cico attempts to start business discussions before their day of shooting begins. Eddie and Susie have a brief aside to chat about his reservations regarding Cico and snagging a peerage with Hawthorne.
Susie's friend Aisha (Maya Jama) arrives with Prince Amir bin Abdullah al-Hadidi, and after introductions are made, it's time to for the group to select their guns for the shoot. Eddie and Geoff are looking to woo all of their guests, which includes agreeing to Gabrielle (Ruby Sear) loading Cico's gun and Jack loading Hawthorne's. Eddie doesn't hold back despite Cico's ego.
Cico brings a problem with Marco Moretti to Eddie and Susie, who found out the truth of the operation and now wants a piece of the pie. They aren't pleased to learn that Cico couldn't keep the mob boss out of the picture, and now they could be on the hook for €40 million a year. Cico presents the purchase of Botticelli's The Virgin and Child Enthroned as a solution to their Marco problem.
When Cico yells at Bella about her constantly looking at Eddie, the next bird she shoots falls out of the sky and hits Cico in the head, momentarily knocking him out. Later that night, Eddie has a drink with Hawthorne, who knows that he's seeking peerage. Hawthorne asks for £30k and Eddie wants his endorsement. It's all agreeable, but Hawthorne has a sexual interest in Jack that he adds to the deal.
Before dinner begins, Bella explains how she met Cico to Eddie, learning more about the truth of his "clumsiness." Nanny (Benjamin Clementine), Charly's (Jasmine Blackborow) partner and her son's father, arrives to join the festivities. As for Freddy's (Daniel Ings) whereabouts? He's recuperating from indulging in his various vices. Cico makes a scene of spitting out his corked wine.
What happens to Cico after his painting heist is revealed?
Eddie takes Cico to select a new bottle of wine and while separated from the group, Eddie calls him out about calling the wine corked when it wasn't, not to mention getting Bella a tiger as a gift. It's just an extra layer of doubt for Eddie in teaming up with him. Later, Eddie and Susie compare notes about buying the painting and including her brother in the deal with Hawthorne.
The next day, Eddie and Susie meet with her father Bobby (Ray Winstone) and chat in the sauna. He explains to them the myth of the Bannik, who you can ask a question to and in response, he will either pat your back or scratch you depending on his answer. Guess which one is the bad response. The Bannik confirmed that they need to buy the Botticelli for Moretti.
Bobby urges Eddie and Susie to work with Cico and lights a fire under them to get the deal done with Hawthorne to get Eddie in the House of Lords. Eddie and Susie head to the art auction to lock down the Botticelli, and Susan runs into Joe Green (Tyler Conti), an old acquaintance who's clearly still interested in her, and Eddie notices. Quickly, they are in a bidding war with a man on the phone.
Eddie thinks they should back down, but Bobby won't let them back down, leading them to buy the painting for £16 million, much more than they had planned. As they head out of the auction with the painting, a group of men on bikes rushes into them. Susie drops the painting, and one of the men picks it up. Geoff, Jack, and the team act quickly and are in pursuit of the thieves.
One by one, they take down the thieves before cornering the one with the painting. The thief rats out Robert Brooks as the person who called on them to steal the painting. Naturally, they now have Robert chained and slightly beaten to question him. Robert reveals that he was doing a favor for an Italian friend named Gino de Bambi. Eddie presents a photo, and Robert confirms Gino's identity.
Eddie and Susie arrive in Italy to meet with Cico at Bella's estate. They're hoping to meet wth Moretti, and they quickly realize that Cico never called to set up a meeting, so they did so themselves. They also reveal that they know he's Gino de Bambi and the painting is his. He's been caught by them and now Moretti, who feeds Cico to the tiger. Eddie and Susie strike up a deal with Moretti. Unfortunately, at the episode's end, Bobby asks the Bannik if the Duke can be trusted, and he's scratched.
