Hailed as one of the better video game adaptations of all time, HBO’s The Last of Us has some major updates for the fans. Based on Naughty Dog’s hit post-apocalyptic game, the series initially received critical acclaim for accurately portraying the dread and the emotions attached to the original story.
However, season 2 brought a wave of criticism and debate within the fandom due to shifts in the narrative and character changes. A lot has been said about casting decisions, especially Kaitlyn Dever’s portrayal of Abby Anderson. Fans have called into question the stark physical differences between Abby’s game and onscreen portrayal.
Despite the backlash, it’s almost impossible to recast Abby, since the third season of The Last of Us will be told mostly from her perspective. The first two seasons covered The Last of Us and the better part of The Last of Us II. Therefore, the final season will likely wrap up the part of the game’s story in which the player is forced to play as Abby.
As for who will join Abby’s traumatic journey, The Last of Us season 3 will introduce a few key characters, primarily representing the Seraphites and their role in Ellie and Abby’s story. From introducing an original character to bringing more familiar faces from the game, here are the latest casting updates for The Last of Us season 3.

The Last of Us season 3 will add an original character
One of the most surprising additions to the show is definitely Peter Sarsgaard, who will be playing a completely original character tailor-made especially for the television series. He will be seen portraying a Seraphite leader named Amon. It’s unclear what Amon is supposed to reflect in terms of the game’s story, but he will help the show pivot to Abby’s side of things.
He could be the Seraphite leader in the upcoming season who represents the core values and culmination of this religious faction’s existence in the story. Instead of depicting the Seraphites as a whole and their eventual influence on Seattle, the show could focus on a single character to distill the faction’s ideology and methodology.
The Seraphites in The Last of Us’s post-apocalyptic world play an important role in creating the dreaded atmosphere. The players in the game have to deal with the militia and the radicalism that comes along with their beliefs in prophets and saviors. Since we’ll get to learn about Abby’s life before and after she murdered Joel in cold blood, people from this religious faction will pop up every now and then.

Abby’s story will bring different characters into the light
Abby Anderson is a morally grey character whose choices are both understandable and downright outrageous. It’s confirmed that HBO’s The Last of Us season 3 will heavily focus on retelling the events that led Abby to that cabin in which she killed Joel and also what happened afterwards.
Her perspective will also explore several key characters, including Seraphites with whom Abby established meaningful relationships, like young Yara and Lev, played by Michelle Mao and Kyriana Kratter. Their mother, Miriam, with whom they have a deep relationship, will be portrayed by the talented Li Jun Li.
It should be noted that Yara and Lev’s mother doesn’t have a significant appearance or dialogue in the game, but she will nonetheless be played by a notable actress. This means that season 3 will go all out to expand Abby’s world and focus on the people who helped shape her character.
Not only that, but other characters like Lev also have emotionally impactful arcs in the game that flesh out shared devastation caused by the outbreak and the chaos that followed. Therefore, their presence in the series will be pivotal for understanding Abby's humanity. Another noteworthy addition to the series will be Abby’s father, Jerry Anderson, played by veteran actor Patrick Wilson.
This could mean we’ll see a lot more of Jerry’s influence in Abby’s life and on her road to revenge than just the fateful death that set her off on a deadly path. We will also see Tati Gabrielle’s Nora, Spencer Lord’s Owen, and Ariela Barer’s Mel in season 3, as they have been promoted to series regulars.
A character like Abby Anderson represents the calculated mayhem the game forces upon its player, so they understand the price of survival. The Last of Us isn't about the virus or the monsters it's created; rather, it's about the brutality etched into the new world men have created.
It’s a crueler world that prioritizes revenge as a form of social value and a glue that ties a fragile community together. We’ll hope to see both Abby's and Ellie’s revenge arcs side by side, as the two women are driven by the same emotions and walk similar paths toward moral destruction.
As for when we can see them in action, well, HBO is eying a 2027 release. It’s highly likely the series will wrap up with season 3, but nothing is absolute until announced.
