At the end of The Lowdown season 2 episode 3, Lee Raybon (Ethan Hawke) faced a big challenge. He confronted the man who has been following him and, along with Johnny (Rafael Casal), he was able to take him down. It was only then he learned the man is a sheriff's deputy, which caused at least a minor freak out.
The Lowdown season 2 episode 4, “Raw Milk,” saw Lee take in more information and run with it. Let’s dive in.
Racing for guidance
As we open, Lee and Johnny are racing toward a destination with their guest, Deputy Lonny Reed (Austin Amelio), to try and get some guidance. They show up to consult with Cyrus (Killer Mike) and his lawyer friend (Derrick Haywood). But Cyrus isn’t pleased to learn a corrupt cop has been delivered to his doorstep. It turns out that’s okay, because by the time they get out to the car Lonny has escaped. That leaves Lee with questions, concerns, and a broken tooth.
Lee makes contact with Ginger (Betty Gilpin). She’s still trying to find Mekko but has no luck. She’s also not pleased to learn that it was a cop who tried to break into her house and who she shot. But they make their way to Johnny’s office so he can fix Lee’s tooth. Lee is nervous about it all, but he gets through it.
They then move out to meet with Ginger’s old colleague, Jeff Morgan (Kirk Fox), who might have some clues as to what’s happening. The big question is the death of Nathan Spence, who died in the custody of the Sheriff’s Department. He was supposed to be in a diversion program and not in jail at all. Jeff shares there is an investigation, but the sheriff (Martha Plimpton) isn’t the kind to be messed with.
Ginger and Jeff head off to talk to Nathan Spence’s mother. As they arrive, Mrs. Spence (Laura Spencer) is hesitant to talk to Ginger. But when Ginger makes clear she means to get to the truth, she opens up a little. But they have left Lee, who gets up to his own trouble.
An archeological conspiracy
Meanwhile, Marty (Keith David) and Ray (Michael Hitchcock) are looking for answers about secret societies and ancient relics. They are in Lee’s bookstore when Senior (Tommy Lee Jones) walks through. He has some experience with digs and all that goes into it. So, Marty and Ray think he might be the secret wild card they need as they head to an auction that brings out some of the wealthy elites.

At the auction, they connect with Vincent (Darryl Cox). He doesn’t know what to make of Senior, but it’s clear that Lee’s father does have some knowledge and experience. While Marty and Ray attend the auction and try to feel out the people, Senior takes a look at what’s out in the display cases. Outside the event, it turns out that there might be more to the story than expected. This feels like the start of a deeper mystery.
Lee causing a stir
Meanwhile, Lee heads out to meet a local journalist, Dale (Steve Earle). Dale was the one who gave Lee a ride last week and was also at the awards ceremony. He recognized Lee but didn’t say anything. He works as the local truth teller, but he has a different take on the role of the local journalist. He and Lee exchange ideas and talk about the death of Nathan Spence. Dale urges some caution, but Lee has his own way of doing things. That leads to confronting the Sheriff at a county fair.
Before he gets face-to-face, Lee decides to try some raw milk. It tastes good, but it doesn’t settle well. Which makes his face-to-face with the sheriff a bit abbreviated. He has time to throw around some accusations before running for the toilet. While he’s trying to recover, Lonny Reed shows up and asks for his badge and gun. Lee only has one of them, and he soon finds himself in jail.
Turns out that McMann (Shane McRae) is the cousin of the sheriff. And both McMann, his cousin, and Lonny are interested in the whereabouts of Mekko. And they believe that Lee is the key to finding him. That leaves Lee behind bars and in a pickle as things wrap up.
Lee is doing his thing, and he’s learning some things. There is certainly something shady going on with the death of Nathan Spence and Mekko escaping. Will he get to the truth in time? That’s the question as we move toward the second half of the season.
Meanwhile, it’s fair to wonder what Marty has stumbled into as well and whether it will end up connecting to Lee’s mission.
