Of all the TV reboots that have yet to happen, it seems like The Office is one fans continue to bring up even 13 years after the series finale aired on NBC. If you're one of those fans, we have some bad news for you.
Greg Daniels, the creator of The Office, was just honored with a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame on Thursday, Sept. 10, 2026. Daniels revealed that the oft-discussed reboot of the series will not be happening in an interview with Variety.
“I don’t think we need to find out what all the characters are doing so much because of the way the show ended,” he said. “It seemed like people liked the ending and you’re just sort of risking a lot to open it up again.”
So, there you have it. The Office reboot will not be happening, and it's because Daniels feels really good about the ending and isn't interested in opening that back up.
It's definitely been a weird journey for The Office after its end back in 2013. We've learned a lot about those final seasons, why Carell left the show, and why things played out the way they did. Since then, there's been a lot of chatter about spinoffs about individual characters or groups of the characters. Of course, none of those came to fruition.
It makes sense why The Office reboot will never happen
I've had a lot of thoughts about a potential The Office reboot over the years. I've always hoped that it could happen because I miss a lot of these great stars. Michael Scott is forever my favorite TV character of all time. I would love for the show to right some of the wrongs that happened with Steve Carell's exit and absence in the show's final seasons.
With that said, I totally agree with Daniels. It feels like the moment has passed. Any reboot would merely be fan service at this point. The show changed so much over its nine seasons on NBC. They'd just be coming back to play the hits again, which wasn't always the most fun viewing experience. The first five seasons of The Office are as good as anything we've seen on TV in the last 26 years. My fear would be that any reboot would just feel like the show's final seasons, which were quite disjointed from the early years.
In other words, I'm totally fine with the show being over. I have the episodes to rewatch over and over, and I do. I agree that it's time to say goodbye to all these characters and stop hoping that we'll see them again in The Office.
I do think that, if The Paper gets picked up for another season, the show could do better with including some of the original stars of The Office in the series. The Paper, which is set within the same universe as The Office and also stars Oscar Nunez, had its second season premiere on Peacock on Sept. 9. It feels like The Office in a lot of ways, but the magic isn't quite what it used to be, even though Domhnall Gleeson is just an outstanding lead in the series.
After all these years, it's time to turn the page on The Office reboot. It's not happening, and that's okay.
