In the last episode of season 2 of The Terminal List, things got rough for James Reece (Chris Pratt). He was on the trail of Mo Farooq (Dar Salim) when his compound was attacked.

That left him with more questions about his former friend and colleague and a new commitment to get to the truth. The fourth episode, “Into the Labyrinth,” plunges Reece and others further into the web of lies and conspiracy as they seek to get to the bottom of what’s happening. Let’s dive in.

A new hunter

The episode begins in Rojava, a democratic republic where an election is about to take place. The candidate offers a new start and maybe a new sense of freedom. Naturally that’s a threat. A sniper, Nizar (Amir Khoury), sits in a fan keeping watch and waiting for his moment. That moment finally arrives, and he takes the shot. The candidate is hit and killed.

Nizar is part of this new terror cell, and after his success, he’s called to a new assignment. He arrives in the desert, where he wins a competition. It holds the promise of a difficult and secret new assignment. Clearly, Nizar will be part of whatever is coming.

What is Kestrel

Meanwhile, after their target is killed, Raife (Tom Hopper) and Katie Buranek (Constance Wu) are stuck trying to find answers. So, that prompts them toward research into Kestrel, but discovering who or what it is turns out to be tougher than imagined. And when Raife finds that the conspiracy around their target’s death is covered up, that narrows the potential leads.

Katie has other things on her mind. Voltstreem has been sold, and Jordan (Arturo Castro) has left the company. Now, it seems Adrenov (Costa Ronin) wants Katie to take over as editor. She’s not sold. She’s a reporter and heart and is in the midst of chasing a story. But Adrenov has cleared the way for her to finish her book, and he’s proven to be something of an ally.

Katie is headed to his gala, where she’s to be announced as editor. But she decides to take her gun, just in case. Before she can get in, she gets a call that someone at the National Archives has found a reference to Kestrel. So, she heads to get answers. After copying what she needs, she heads to her car. Raife hasn’t yet arrived, but Katie begins to feel something is amiss. Soon, she’s attacked. She fights off the first one but is wounded in the process. His partner catches up and shoots her again, knocking her off her feet.

The assailant looks for what she found, but she won’t give it up. Just as he’s about to finish the job, Raife arrives. He fires a shot and saves Katie’s life. She’s wounded but might have found answers.

A deepening mystery

Meanwhile, in Beirut, Reece has arrived with the team. He meets the boss (Yul Vazquez) and gets a briefing. He’s meant to be sidelined since he could have been the target of the assault. But he convinces Freddy (Gabriel Luna) to let him try to bait Farooq to come find him. Freddy agrees, and Reece heads out on the streets.

There, he runs into Jules (Luke Hemsworth), who is following him, but Jules isn’t upset. He likes the plan and offers to help. He and Reece team up and find a connection to try and lure Farooq into a meeting. But while Jules makes contact, Reece secretly makes his own contact. The meeting is set, but Reece is convinced he needs to look his old friend in the face.

So, in the process of the mission, Reece ditches his comms and allows Farooq’s team to pick him up. That leaves Jules, Freddy, and the rest scrambling. Once in with Farooq, Reece sets out to get some answers. But he gets a response he didn’t expect.

Farooq didn’t turn; he was embedded in the terror cell by Jules. He has been reporting the missions and hasn’t been too pleased with the response, especially when his team was tricked into attacking a U.S. outpost that turned out to be Reece, Freddy, and the rest. Now, it’s clear that Jules is trying to cover his tracks and sacrificing Farooq.

Farooq sets Reece free to return to the unit. Now that he knows the truth, he’ll be able to get to the bottom of what’s happening. Things are starting to heat up.

We are moving in a lot of directions as we hit the midpoint of the season. Katie and Raife are closing in on who is behind the weapons theft. Meanwhile, we now know that Farooq isn’t a terrorist, but he might be the fall guy.

How will Reece get to the truth, and can he do it in time?
