For nearly three decades, we have been watching Ryan Murphy's envelope-pushing television series on our screens, and whether it's a musical teen drama or a terrifying horror anthology, the prolific producer knows how to keep us hooked. Finally, he's back on FX and Hulu doing what he does best, and that's stirring up trouble in the lives of young people. This time around, there's a killer twist.

Based on the book of the same name by Bret Easton Ellis, The Shards made its premiere on FX and Hulu on Aug. 5 with a pair of gripping episodes that set the stage for the 1980s-set teen thriller. Igby Rigney leads the cast as the author during his senior year of high school in Los Angeles as he and his privileged friends become the targets of a serial killer upon a new student's mysterious arrival.

Quickly after The Shards made its premiere on both FX, where it airs on traditional cable, and Hulu, the series became one of the most popular shows currently streaming on Hulu and Disney+ despite its mixed critical reception. But viewers clearly can't get enough of the chilling and sexy new series. When do new episodes air on FX and drop on Hulu? Here's the full release schedule!

The Shards season 1 contains nine episodes

Upon the show's premiere on Wednesday, Aug. 5, two episodes were released, but don't expect two episodes to be released each week. The first season of The Shards contains nine episodes—not eight, not 10—and comes to an end with its season finale in September. There are two more weeks that feature two-episode drops, but the rest are single-episode drops.

The Shards releases new episodes on Wednesdays at 9/8c on both FX and Hulu. While the series airs on the cable network, the latest episodes are available to stream on Hulu, and Disney+ with a bundle subscription, at the same time. For those on the West Coast of the United States, the latest episodes begin streaming on Hulu and Disney+ at 6 p.m. PT because of the 9 p.m. ET release time.

However, the two-part homecoming episodes will be released as a pair on Aug. 26. From there, the first season will release one episode per week for its final two weeks, ending with the finale on Sept. 9.

Despite having nine episodes, The Shards only airs for six total weeks, a little more than one month on the air, because of the release schedule containing multiple two-episode drops. The season finale and the answers it might provide about The Trawler serial killer are already fast approaching, so make sure to keep up with the episode releases to avoid seeing spoilers.

In addition to Rigney leading the cast, The Shards also stars Kaia Gerber as Susan Reynolds, Homer Gere as Robert Mallory, Hayes Warner as Debbie Schaffer, and Graham Campbell as Thom Wright. Beyond the main teen characters, Evan Rachel Wood and Wes Bentley also have series regular roles as Debbie's dysfunctional parents Liz and Terry Schaffer.

Watch The Shards on FX and Hulu on Wednesdays at 9/8c.
