Why fans can't stop watching Stassi Schroeder's House of Stassi even when it's cynical

Stassi Schroeder's House of Stassi is cynical, self-aware, and No. 1 on Hulu. Here's why fans can't stop watching her Vanderpump Rules comeback.

Nobody who watched Stassi Schroeder in the mid-2000s was surprised she got her own reality show. What's surprising is how good it is and how uncomfortable it is to admit that.

House of Stassi, which premiered on Hulu and Disney+, follows the former Vanderpump Rules queen bee as she steps back into the spotlight with the people she loves most by her side, including former SUR waitress and on-and-off bestie Katie Maloney, husband Beau Clark, and a rotating cast of chosen family. And within its first week, it didn't just perform, but it shot straight to the No. 1 spot on Hulu's TV chart. So clearly, we're not the only ones watching.

The cynicism is the point

Here's the thing about House of Stassi that makes it impossible to look away: Stassi knows exactly what her show is, and she’s not pretending otherwise. Stassi has been refreshingly upfront that the show breaks the fourth wall on purpose, openly acknowledging the cameras instead of pretending they're not there. Yes, this is a calculated move. Yes, she knows you know that. And somehow, that honesty makes it feel more real, making me think we need more of this.

That's the cynical trick of it all. A meta-docuseries about a reality star very deliberately staging her comeback, filmed with the people closest to her, and edited to hit every emotional beat a returning-icon narrative needs. It should feel hollow. Instead, it feels like the most self-aware thing on television right now. And that is saying a lot, especially since we can’t forget Stassi was fired from Bravo for racist actions in 2020.

While I’m not thrilled that her icon is Kris Jenner, as a viewer I am happy to see that House of Stassi has a refreshing take from the content mill that is currently reality TV. Viewers can watch her deal with the very real stakes of her marriage, her friendships, and her ambition pulling her back into a spotlight her own family isn't always thrilled about. When Beau's unhappiness becomes a storyline, or when Stassi and Katie's rekindled friendship ruffles feathers elsewhere in the group, it doesn't feel like reality TV manufacturing conflict. It feels like watching people you've followed for a decade actually deal with the fallout of fame, family, and reinvention.

Frankly, I couldn’t turn away from House of Stassi and streamed it all within two days. It's genuinely compelling television, precisely because it never insults our intelligence by pretending otherwise. Cynical? Absolutely. Addictive? One hundred percent! And honestly, isn't that the most Stassi thing about it?
