Wizards of Waverly Place landed on Disney Channel in Fall 2027, creating magic and launching its young stars into stardom. The cast, crew, and fans never imagined the Russos would make a comeback years after the four-season series ended in 2012. Following many conversations between David Henrie and Selena Gomez, they finally brought their ideas to Disney and launched Wizards Beyond Waverly Place in 2024.

After two magical seasons (2024 and 2025), Disney broke our hearts when they announced the reboot would end with season 3. Not only was it coming to a premature ending (in my opinion), but it concluded with a four-episode finale event on August 4 and 5 on Disney Channel and Disney Plus.

I can’t believe a show that’s been around since I was 11 is now over. From one fan to another, here’s our goodbye to a magical series. Grab your tissues, favorite beverage, and snack, and snuggle up for an emotional packed beginning to the end in episode 1.

Penwulf-Russo History

Wizards Beyond Waverly Place has brought fans so much love from the Russo family but also new characters with unknown backgrounds. After wondering who Billie’s parents were since her arrival at Justin’s house, Alex had the key to their shared history. Billie’s grandfather was a threat to her safety, so her parents hid her from themselves and him. Like all good things, Billie returned to her family many years after Alex and Justin dropped her off at school and erased their memories.

As Billie’s grandfather threatens the Russos’ lives, the locket opens with Alex’s tears. It restores all of their memories of Alex and Damien being Billie’s parents. With that realization out of the way, Alex does the only thing she knows to do to keep her daughter safe. Alex promises to find Billie again and pushes her father-in-law into the rift.

Rift aftermath

Billie lost her mom, learned the truth about her family, and saw her magic used in a dangerous way at the end of season 2. We pick up days later with Billie’s fear-induced nightmare. After waking up, Winter states the obvious: Billie has had the same nightmare since her mom disappeared three days ago. Despite feeling like her powers are dangerous, Billie has a great support system to back her up. But it will take a little trial and error for her to realize that she can control her powers.

Roman and Milo successfully hid Alex’s boxes from Billie by moving them back and forth with magic. They tiptoe around her emotions like Justin told them to, but it only worries her more. She goes to Justin for help while Winter helps the boys with the boxes. Unfortunately, Billie talks to Justin after he’s zipped up his emotional baggage. Instead of assuring her she’s not dangerous, he tells her the rift could happen again. His words send her into a spiral, causing her to break her wand and leave her vulnerable to further danger.

Emotional Baggage Problem

Justin and Gia worry about Alex in the lair as the kids are going through their own problems. After many tiring attempts and loss of focus, Gia convinces Justin that he needs coffee. But she makes one mistake on her way out. She jokes about whether Justin could somehow turn off his emotions and think clearly. As she leaves, he remembers the Emotional Baggage spell and zips his emotions away in a bag only he can open.

Justin breaks the coffee machine and builds a locating device to find Alex. The machine can’t locate Alex, which leaves Justin confused. It cracks me up that he acknowledges that he would be more bummer if he had his emotions. Instead, he has Gia fix his stair stepper since he can’t find Alex. Now, it is up to Gia to restore Justin’s emotional bond to his sister.

She steals his wand and puts it in an identical bag. He won’t listen to her about restoring his emotions. He goes through many thoughts to solve which bag his wand is in. Finally, Gia tricks him into opening his emotional baggage.

After restoring his emotions, the machine locates Alex. His emotional bond with Alex broke the seal between them and found her. I agree with Gia; Justin’s superpowers are his emotions. They make the best team and couple.

Meanwhile in another dimension, Alex yells in her sleep for someone to cool it with the chainsaws and realizes it is herself. In a lint-congested voice, Harper announces she’s back. Alex opens the door to a smiling Harper as if no time had passed between them. She questions her about why she’s here. Harper tells her they live together in this apartment like they always have.

Speckled Unicorn Roadhouse

For once, Milo is right about the unknown as Roman disappears. He lands in the wizarding world in the middle of a biker roadhouse called the Speckled Unicorn. Even though Justin overhears that his eldest son is missing, he agrees that no action is needed on his part since the kids know where he’s at. They ignore Justin’s weirdness (lack of emotions) and head to the lair. Billie tells Milo to go first without revealing she gave up her powers before they came downstairs.

Roman throws himself through the window as the gang arrives to save him. Unfortunately, their time isn’t over at the Speckled Unicorn, as one of the bikers reveals the jacket belongs to Damien Penwulf. As soon as Milo reveals it was in Alex’s boxes, Billie charges into danger (she really is Alex’s daughter). After getting herself in danger, Roman is thrown through the window. Before they can escape, the angry wizard brings Winter and Milo in.

Bravely, Billie tells the wizards that she’s Penwulf’s daughter, but they don’t believe her. The head biker wizard tells her to conjure the Penwulf family herald. I love how Winter relates it to a Patronus from Harry Potter, and every wizard yells “no!” Winter, being Winter, still thinks that what makes the most sense (she’s not wrong, honestly). Billie’s confession about having no powers results in Roman fainting. Can Billie somehow get them out of this mess without her magic?

Wishing she could conjure the herald, the kids hold hands. Winter and Billie’s glow blue, and the floggie appears. They won’t know until much later who conjured it, but whoever did saved them. The herald proves Billie’s relation to Penwulf, and the lead biker wizard gives her a teddy bear. Her dad left this bear with his friends in case Billie ever came looking for him.
