Wonka's The Golden Ticket, Netflix's new reality competition series, is finally streaming, and we're going to be recapping every episode of the first season.
In Wonka's The Golden Ticket, 12 contestants and their loved ones will compete for a lifetime of money in Willy Wonka's Chocolate Factory. Viewers will experience movie magic through nine episodes streaming on Sept. 23, with the final two episodes coming on Sept. 30.
Despite Willy Wonka’s Chocolate Factory being for kids, Netflix's Golden Ticket winners are adults who have chosen a partner to join them on the series.
Since the first Wonka adaptation in 1971, the Golden Ticket winners have only been kids, who of course, were accompanied by an adult. Over the years, we've seen a few Willy Wonkas, played by Gene Wilder (1971), Johnny Depp (2005), and Timothee Chalamet (2023) with the help of Oompa Loompas, lead a group of Golden Ticket winners and their accompanying parent/guardian through the gates of Wonka’s Chocolate Factory.
This might be the most controversial Wonka series to date, though. The official trailer dropped on August 31st, 2026, but viewers weren’t pleased with Netflix using AI to recreate Gene Wilder’s voice.
Although I’m not super thrilled one of the voices of my childhood has been recreated by AI, apparently, it was blessed by his wife. When the news broken in June 2026, Deadline made sure fans knew that fact.
What are the rules of Wonka's The Golden Ticket?
At 10 a.m., our 12 teams step out onto the purple carpet in front of the factory gates. The new players you need to know are:

Each ticket holder scans their ticket and enters Wonka’s factory with their partner. Once inside, Gene Wilder’s AI voice (approved by his estate and wife) tells them the cash prize.
The excitement of winning sizzles as they sign their names and start the first challenge. The last team in line turns into the first, and the players enter the creepy funhouse-like hallway. True to its episode title, there’s “no turning back now,” as the challenge goes sideways.
Purple and Gold, where will you go?
“Purple is proven, steady, and true. Gold is untested, dazzling, and new. Play it safe…or strike for gold - if given the chance, will you be bold?”
Wonka doesn’t hold back as the first challenge starts with misconceptions and disappearing contestants. Oh, you thought this was going to be a magical experience? Think again, because the purple and gold gumballs have other plans. While one takes the contestants to the Wonkavator, the other puts them in jeopardy. Five very unlucky guests are displaced while another risks her fate to save her partner.
Wonkavator reaches full capacity and tells the contestants to pick one player to step off the elevator. After much worrying that this will terminate their tour (gameplay), Ava decides to take one for the team. Without her dad “as her moral compass,” she takes a risk and steps off the elevator in hopes of finding her dad. With a burst of energy, the elevator starts, and the next time it opens its doors, the remaining contestants walk into Wonka’s chocolate room. As many point out, it is as if you stepped into the movie, complete with a chocolate river and edible decor everywhere.
If the mood hasn’t shifted enough without their other halves, Marcy calls out for Joanne, which causes the other misplaced contestants to call out. Wonka points the contestants to the larger-than-life gumball machine where their missing loved ones are trapped in gumballs: Marcy, Moon, Ziad, Jeff, and Taylor. On top of Ava not being there to speak to her dad, Jeff, the rescue mission is a sticky one.
"This isn’t all fun and games. If you don’t free your loved ones from their gumballs, their tour will be terminated," Wonka says.
After a lot of emotional stories, we finally find out how they can save their loved ones. There are 13 coins hidden around Wonka’s chocolate room. Each player must find one. There’s a catch. Each loved one requires three coins to be set free, so not all will make it out.
In other news, Ava's risk paid off, as she comes sailing down the chocolate river with two coins. This puts her at an advantage to save her dad from the gumball machine. This is where things get tricky. The five teams with missing loved ones will have until tomorrow morning to persuade the others to help them free them. Consider the stakes raised!
To bring back the magic, Wonka brings out his Oompa Loompas. Although they come in all shapes and sizes now, one has been with him for 50 years. Despite the game stress, it’s hard to be upset when you are seeing the Oompa Loompas’ song right in front of you. Following their song, the contestants leave their loved ones behind and find their living quarters for the competition. The contestants get to work persuading the others to form alliances with them.
The Power of Persuasion
An Oompa Loompa leads them back into Wonka’s chocolate room the following morning. All the alliances seem to be set. The training video instructs them to go in the order of their coin numbers (1-13). If things couldn’t get any worse, Everett and James are coins 12 and 13, making them the deciding votes for who stays and who goes this early in the competition. The decision weighs heavily as each loved one gets a coin.
We know our five loved ones will pick their other halves. While Jeff will receive two from Ava, where will the other come from? Who will fill in the gap for the others? Depending on those alliances, who will be terminated?
This one test leads Kayla to believe she can’t trust Nick and Jason. Kayla and her dad, Bill, trusted them to help them set Moon and Ziad free. In a turn of events, the coworkers choose to help Bryce and Taylor reunite.
While everyone cheers, Kayla decides she has found her new enemies. In my opinion, this is where she starts getting a little over the top. I understand wanting to win, but saying Taylor isn’t worthy of saving because she is only a girlfriend is weird energy. Every loved one was worthy of saving. Unfortunately, the contestants had to go with their gut. With those choices came disappointment, but also others' happiness. The other decisions aren’t as dramatic as this first one, but who is set free is still interesting.
Although I have no idea what happens to the remaining loved one in the gumball, I do know who moves forward and who doesn’t. To preserve your viewership, meet me in the next article where I’ll reveal who was set free and who was terminated. Let me warn you, these contestants are emotional and put a lot of thought into these decisions. Whoever moves forward, don’t blame the other contestants, for it was a very tough decision.
