Poppy guessed wrong, as Wonka's The Golden Ticket episode 5 begins. He tells Ziad to take care of Jackson. My heart can't handle it.
After they say goodbye and Ziad cheers for his tour continuing, the Oompa Loompa hands in another card. Now, Ziad becomes the last jelly bean standing, but it comes with a price of sorts.
“You passed the jellybean test and are the last bean standing. Your reward, a power in the next test. Tomorrow you must pick three team captains, knowing that if their team loses in the test that follows, that Captain's tour will be terminated. You will sit out entirely, meaning your place in the tour is safe.”
That heartfelt parting doesn't last long when the power starts to go to his head. He's been waiting for it and wants to be called Evil Ziad.
But wait! He does hold his promise and passes Poppy's “I love you” to Jackson and his regrets that he had to end his tour. Then, to Kayla's face, he accepts her apology for putting him in that position.
Bryce and Sasha are shocked Ziad is letting Kayla think her plan worked to form this group of four. Then, he turns the tables in his hot seat moment. He definitely wants to keep that target on Kayla's back and put her as one of three captains. Now, he has to pick two more, and those aren't as easy.
He ruffles some feathers when Tatum notices that Ziad is talking to a group of people, and then they disperse when she walks to bed. If I were Tatum, I would be suspicious, too. She had every right to be suspicious because they were talking about her because she and her mom have the least emotional connection to Ziad. Tatum pulls Z aside along with Austin and her mom and finds out the truth.
Neither one of them feels comfortable with mother and daughter going against each other, but I agree with Z that he wants to hopefully keep them safe while only risking one of them. Because Kellye doesn't want to be without her daughter, she would rather Tatum stay safe. So, if Kellye gets eliminated, she knows Tatum can hold her own in the game. She doesn't want to risk Tatum being eliminated because she doesn't want to do this game without her. I can understand that. But this puts Z in a very tough position.
Hard, Harder, and Hardest risk
Each team will take on the same challenge. But one test is harder, harder, and the hardest.
Ziad saying his reasons for picking each woman was interesting. The way he picked Kayla was diabolical, but she had it coming to her. Although she thinks he's a coward, he's not. He's doing exactly what she did to him. Although she thought she was creating the perfect team of four, no one else saw it that way.
Kayla (Hardest): Shawn, Hunter, Everett, and Ava
Kellye (Harder): Jackson, Austin, Gabrielle, and Bryce
Tatum (Hard): Sasha, Garrison, Taylor, and Jeff
Wonka tells everyone to board the boat while Ziad stays behind in the chocolate room. He's risking it all to get Kayla out, hoping mother and daughter play to win. If not, he definitely has a target on his back. Honestly, it was for a good reason. No one likes "Alligator Tears," the episode title coming in hot, Kayla!
Until they step off the boat, the test is unknown to them. Each team is put into a different room with their doors labeled according to their teams. Lo and behold, it's the wallpaper that the contestants licked in the famous movie, so what's the challenge?
Lickety Split (training video name) is a true test of leadership: each room has one way out and the contestants have to lick their way to safety. Each team member must lick the lickable wallpaper to uncover letters. Mr. Wonka has hidden underneath. Those letters must all be entered into the keypad. Once the team members have entered all of the letters, you will receive further instructions on how to escape the room. However, the captain of the losing team will be terminated. Every room has a different number of letters they have to find ranging from four to seven.
Lickety Split escape room
While everyone is rushing to lick to their escape, Ziad is sitting back and watching them on a small WonkaTV. Basically, this is Wonka's version of an escape room with a delicious twist.
Kellye’s team makes it out first. As Wonka says, they'd licked the competition and secured their safety. They immediately go into the chocolate room and run to Ziad. Now, they are watching the teams on WonkaTV hoping Tatum’s team wins. With only one letter remaining each, it is anyone's game. Tatum and team finally find the H to spell "hard" and escape their room.
Kayla's team loses with one letter missing. With how Ava smiled, we know she was working against her team captain, hoping she was terminated. As Tatum's team cheers and reunites in the chocolate room with Kellye’s team, Kayla's team’s room goes on immediate lockdown.
There's always a price to pay, even with losing. Wonka informs them that “with all bad leaders, she must choose someone to take the fall with her.” Now, she must choose one of her teammates to go down with her in a matter of five minutes or they'll all be terminated. Either she is breaking up a team (Ava and Shawn's), or she's taking out the last one standing (Hunter and Everett). This really is diabolical. Yet again, she's in a position to take people out, but this time she'll go out with them. She's being fair and wanting to leave the single players in the game and risk breaking up a team. I kind of agree because at least Shawn and Ava will still have a player in the game if they are terminated.
Shocking everyone, including me, Kayla chooses Shawn to take with her. In this, Kayla believes Garrison can stand on his own while Jeff can't. With how Jeff performed in the last two challenges, that makes sense. It still sucks because Shawn and Garrison are here for such a heartfelt reason and Ava just begged to stay. The others are set free while the room grows smaller with Shawn and Kayla in the room.
Although emotions are high yet again, Kellye Lawton's the mood when she finds a note and a crown on her bed from Mr. Wonka.
“Dear Kellye, My Patrick Queen, well done as the winning team. Captain and lickable wallpaper. Congratulations on your crowning achievement. To celebrate your saving advantage in the next factory test.”
I love that her daughter, Tatum, places the crown on her head, revealing that her mom won Miss America in 1987. She's not new to crowns, but wow, what an honor from Wonka! And although Ziad is glad his plan worked. Kellye still holds a bit of animosity against him. So we'll see how the next game goes for him.
Ice cream and marshmallows
Wonka radio calls the remaining contestants into the kitchen for some ice cream with a twist, of course. But everything's a challenge in the factory.
“The good thing about food is you don't just eat it. You can play with it too. Just for fun and to mellow out some marshmallow games. Get into pairs, stack them as high as you can, stuff as many into your mouth, and try to say oompa loompa. Shoot marshmallows into each other's mouths.”
While the contestants end the day on a sugar high, the oompa loompas make the factory elevator sparkle and shine. A new day starts at the factory, and the contestants have no idea what's next.
Wonkavator of doom
One of the Oompa Loompas (the queen, as they call her) leads them to the Wonkavator. The sign says, “Some of you are going up, while some of you are going down.” That's not suspicious at all.
After boarding the Wonkavator, things become interesting. The excitement of visiting unseen factory floors quickly wears off when Wonka tells them why.
“At each floor, a select number of guests will lead the Wonkavator to play games, which will test either skill, strategy, loyalty, or precision. To get back onto the Wonkavator, you must complete the test and when one of the four's gold key cards. If you do not get a gold key card, you cannot re-enter the Wonkavator and you will be terminated.”
Kellye's advantage is choosing four guests to get off at the first stop, the stacking room. Wonka, in a turnover of events, tells her she may even choose herself. He doesn't forget to mention that she must choose wisely because one of the four will be terminated.
Stackers: Ziad (nominated by Kellye out of old-school hate as Austin puts it), Jackson (self-nominating because he wants to start playing), and Gabrielle (self-nominating based on stacking marshmallows the night before), and Hunter (self-nominating due to his background in building).
The Wonkavator shoots them up, and our first four players step out into the stacking room. This room is home to the newly redesigned Everlasting Gobstopper 2.0. The contestants have to successfully stack and pack six Everlasting Gobstoppers to claim that golden key card. But if their stack crumbles, all they do is have to start again, but that does risk them falling behind. Once the stack is stacked, they get to push a button. Simply put, once they push that button and claim the gold key card, they can return to the Wonkavator. Sounds easy enough, but I'm guessing it's not.
Unfortunately, there's a twist involved with finishing. The first to finish decides who competes on the next floor. While the last to finish will be terminated from the tour. So while everyone is at risk for termination, depending on what floor you're on, only one will be terminated from each floor.
Given it's episode 5, we're dwindling down really fast. Two went home with the last challenge, and now, lots of contestants are up for termination. Who will it be? Unfortunately, Gabriella goes out first. The rest is revealed in episode 6!
Although this challenge happened in this episode, to keep you guessing, I'll save it for the next episode recap of the Netflix series.
