In Wonka's The Golden Ticket episode 6, Hunter soon finds out quickly that “this is not construction 101” with the pieces being weird-shaped sizes and weights. He is struggling right out of the gate.
Unfortunately for him, his building background may as well be useless in this challenge. And as someone who grew up around construction and then worked in construction, I feel very bad for him. I will say he's one I've been rooting for, especially with him losing his brother in the first challenge. He has succeeded against all odds, and now the odds for lack of a better term may be stacked to get to.
Gabriella is looking for a strategy and connecting her pieces to their likeness. And while she's stacking, the counter is going up and down depending on how she's placing her blocks. I have faith in her if she can stack marshmallows. I think she can stack these weirdly shaped Gobstoppers.
Jackson is feeling the pressure with 3 million on the line and the last man standing in his team.
Ziad is also feeling the pressure as he looks from everybody to his blocks as they keep tumbling. He whispers to himself to stay focused, but I think he's anything but focused. He's making this too easy to be terminated, yet he's not the only one struggling, so he might save himself.
Feeling empowered as the only woman on the stacking floor, Gabriella successfully sacks all six gobstoppers. I love that Jackson congratulates her as he's still struggling, but he's excited for her. She pushes her button, accepts the golden ticket, and walks back on to the Wonkavator.
Ziad, through body shakes, successfully places the six Gobstoppers on top of his other five. With Hunter's encouragement, she pushes his button, accepts his golden ticket, and walks back onto the Wonkavator. We know he's walking back into a trap with a target on his back.
Jackson and Hunter are at risk for termination. I don't want to see either of them go home, but I feel like they're going to go out in the coolest way possible. My heart breaks for them as they realize it's between them to see who stays and who goes. As Jackson puts it best, it's a lose-lose situation. They both have done excellently in this tour, and both are struggling with this challenge as they tried to talk it through. They are neck and neck with five Gobstoppers each. Hunter's stack crashes to the ground. So, who won and who was terminated?
Through encouragement from Hunter, Jackson pushes his button. Jackson feels defeated, but Hunter tells him to go win. I agree with Hunter; I think they'll remain friends. They both did so good! Before the Wonkavator closes, everyone yells “we love you” to Hunter and commences him on a job well done in the game.
Crushing Room
Gabrielle has the power, as the first stacker finished, to choose the next unlucky five players for the crushing room. The twist is spun tighter when Wonka reveals only three will return, meaning two players will be terminated. With the choice feeling daunting and her future in the game at risk, she lets the others volunteer.
Kellye volunteers despite being safe from this test. Next to her, four men are playing against her because Ava would rather wait for a different game and set of players. Austin, Bryce, Garrison, and Jeff step out of the Wonkavator for the next test.
"We have a surplus of rock candy that needs to be crushed with Wonka's brand new invention, the Chomper. Break the rock candy down, then deposit the crushed candy into another guest’s cylinder to save them. You may feel anyone's cylinder accept your own. The first three guests to have their cylinder filled with 10 mouthfuls of crushed candy, are safe and will collect their gold key cards.”
This game seems to be about connections and loyalty. I don't know who to root for. Austin forms an alliance with Bryce and Garrison as he hopes they'll be the three to come out the other side. All I can hear in my head is the TikTok sound. This game is serious, and I'm excited for the outcome.
While Kelleye has Garrison's back, he pays her back and adds to hers. This throws a wrench in Austin's plan, so Jeff decided to help Jeff like Austin helped Ava in the Honeycombs challenge. Honestly, it just means everyone is getting a chance, and I'm okay with that. Garrison finishes, while Austin saves Bryce. Ziad immediately worries for Austin while Tatum worries about her mom. It's neck and neck. Kellye makes the decision to just decide who goes home, and Jeff points out they have enough to top someone off. While Jeff sacrifices himself when Austin says he will keep Ava safe no matter what, it hurts Kellye.
Feeding Room
Returning first pays the price again. Garrison is nervous about what Wonka has prepared. He must select three guests to enter the feeding room. But with the risk of only two being saved, Garrison has a lot to decide.
Because her mom saved Garrison. His number one pick is Tatum. He hopes that he's giving her the chance to save herself in this competition. Unfortunately, they all have to compete in this challenge and risk termination. She can't get out of this unless she wins. He picked Sasha as his number too and then asked the rest to help him figure it out because he's at a loss. Everett volunteers himself so that he can prove that he deserves to be here after being by himself for a bit now.
I love these three contestants, especially when they realize they are going to be bad at this challenge. Although Tatum was sure her sports background wouldn't help, she times it right and wins a golden key card on her first attempt. While Sasha looks pissed, Everett is so happy for Tatum.
One key remains! Before they know it, they are at 20+ attempts. After 59 attempts, Everett tries an overhand throw and gets it in. He and Sasha are shocked. Through tears they say goodbye, and Sasha tells him to tell Gab she's going to win.
Taylor or Ava?
In yet another turn of events, Wonka tells the contestants that all of the golden key card holders can step off at the next floor. Ava and Taylor don't have one yet. Then, he pops one out of the slot and tells Gabrielle, Garrison, and Tatum that they must decide who gets the final key card. Their waiting strategy didn't go in their favor, and now, one more person is up for termination.
First, Garrison has some follow-up questions for Ava about winning over Kayla's termination pick. Ava tries to plead her cause, but Garrison isn't buying it. Honestly, he shouldn't! In her hot seat interview, she said she was doing anything to win. She said whatever she could for Kayla to not pick her over Garrison's mother. Ziad reveals what Jeff told them yesterday as Ava was fighting for her tour spot. Austin regrets Ziad for coming at Ava when he promised Jeff to protect Ava.
I appreciate that Taylor was honest about not fighting for her spot but letting them know she's an honest team player. Now, it is time to choose. Garrison votes for Taylor. Gabrielle tells them she respects them both but picks Taylor because she's been honest this entire game. Tatum ends the voting with Taylor. Ziad gets his way as the Wonkavator returns to the chocolate room, and Ava is left alone. The contestants tap their golden key cards and breathe a sigh of relief.
Pairs vs. single players
With nine contestants left, there are only two pairs remaining, and the rest are singles. Everett reminds the singles club that the pairs are looking strong, and if they can break up a pair, it'll be more even.
Meanwhile, the pairs sit together, and Ziad encourages them to think about the game long-term. Although she's flew under the radar, Taylor points out their best chance of keeping the pairs together is knocking out the singles. Oh no, did they vote for the wrong person to stay? Were the Oompa loompas right that everybody's being fake?
Then, Tatum and Everett agree that Gabriella is the swing of not knowing if she'll take the pairs out. Is she still upset with Ziad and Austin, or is she faking? It is anyone's game now. Just when Everett thinks Gabrielle is for the singles, she skips over to talk to Bryce and Taylor. She confirms in her voiceover that she's close to the couple while not trusting Ziad and Austin.
Sorting Machine
The sleeping quarters go into red alert when the Wonkaradio tells them the sorting machine is malfunctioning. The candy levels are critical, and it's time to report to the sorting room! No time for sleeping for these contestants. The piece of chocolate’s filling will determine their teams — how interestingly delicious! Pink or green are the colors.
Pink: Garrison Bryce Gabrielle Everett
Green: Tatum Taylor Jackson Austin
White: Ziad
With the teams decided, Ziad has the power to choose which team he joins. Wonka challenges him to guess who has a better chance of winning because failure is paid with consequences. Without knowing who will be terminated from winning or losing, Ziad and Austin decide to split up for a better chance of one of them staying in the game. Ziad joins the pink team. Now they have a chance to break up the pairs, but will it work?
"Players must sort six different Wonka candies in the correct order by placing them in six different tubes. When they think they have the correct order they pull the lever. Then the machine will tell them how many candies are in the correct spot, but not which ones. The first team to start all the candies correctly is safe.”
While Austin leads the Green team with the riddle Wonka has provided, Ziad leads the Pink team by sorting as much as possible and figuring it out later. Which strategy will win? Surprisingly, Ziad's strategy works.
They pull the lever, and Wonka reveals they have four tubes correct. Unknown to them, but to the audience, we can say they have the first two and the last two correct, while the middle two are incorrect.
Can they figure it out? Meanwhile, Austin's team is just starting out with the riddle and placing the candies. While both strategies are interesting, I don't know who will win.
With the game still hot and heavy, any team could pull ahead. My hope is that Austin's team wins because his strategy makes the most sense to me. Yet, Ziad has a point. Which strategy comes out on top, and who will crumble under pressure? Stay tuned for the end of the game in the next episode of the Netflix series.
