Let’s Talk About True Detective at the Emmy’s
The Emmy nominations are due to be announced on July 10th, and I’m sure True Detective’s chances are what’s on everybody’s minds. True Detective will be up for at least Best Drama, but don’t be surprised if Best Actor in a Drama Series shows up, or even a well-deserved nod to director Cary Joji Fukunaga. Now that Breaking Bad is finally out of the Emmy rotation, it leaves a great spot for True Detective to shine in. With True Detective’s star power and much talked about performances, it’s a sure bet that it’s going to make an appearance. HBO’s other big drama, Game of Thrones, has typically underperformed at the ceremony, leading some to believe that Emmy voters aren’t fully ready to accept fantasy as as legitimate art-form. While Game of Thrones chances this season are higher than ever before, True Detective is still likely to overcome it in shared categories.

Of course, submitting True Detective as a drama, as previously reported, instead of a miniseries has attracted some negative attention. Back in April, around the time of the network upfronts, Entertainment Weekly reported that HBO was taking heat for making an Emmy bid for the drama category. Since True Detective is an anthology and not a typical series, it’s not an invalid point. FX head John Landgraf certainly wasn’t pleased with the decision during the upfronts:
“To tell you the truth, I think it’s actually unfair for HBO to put True Detective in the drama series category because essentially you can get certain actors to do a closed-ended series … who you can’t get to sign on for a seven-year deal.”
