True Detective’s Director Deserves an Emmy

As you all know by now, we’re less than a month away from the Emmy nominations. It’s a safe bet to say that at the very least Matthew McConaughey is going to be in the running. Possibly even creator, Nic Pizzolatto, for writing. The one person, however, that should not be left out for any reason is director, Cary Joji Fukunaga. There are so many elements in True Detective that come together to create the powerhouse that it is, but Fukunaga’s contribution is possibly the most important, and also the most overlooked. Fukunaga’s direction makes you feel the setting in your bones; it’s due in part to him that Louisiana practically becomes its own character. Fukunaga also directed the 2011 version of Jane Eyre, which is similarly striking.

More from HBO

Fukunaga is going to face heavy competition in this category, but no director this past year has been able to conjure up such atmosphere and emotion. With Season 2 shifting directions to have a different director take on each episode — as if production wasn’t already stressful enough — we’re unfortunately going to be seeing very little of Fukunaga’s work. It’s easy to praise the two actors doing colossal work and so it’s just as easy to overlook some of the other touches that go into the things we love. Especially when it comes to television.
