The Unpredictable Nature of the True Detective Cast

facebooktwitterreddit

With the newest bit of news floating around that Vince Vaughn is in talks for True Detective, it’s becoming apparent that trying to makes guesswork of the True Detective case is a total crap-shoot. For some, Vince Vaughn is going to seem like a very odd choice. After all, the actor isn’t exactly know for his dramatic acting. All judgement will be reserved until we see him on screen, and just because he’s not known for dramatic acting doesn’t mean that he won’t be able to knock it out of the park.

Hopefully we all still remember Jim Carrey in Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind.

It’s likely that Nic Pizzolatto and HBO aren’t purposefully trying to go for shocking casting choices, but if this turns out to be true it will be very similar to when people heard that Woody Harrelson and Matthew McConaughey would be co-starring in season one. None of the actors that have been so far rumored to be joining the production (Colin Farrell, Taylor Kitsch) have appeared in our Dream Casting feature, so it shouldn’t be surprising for you to learn that Vince Vaughn wasn’t exactly coming up next.

More from HBO

Until we get an official confirmation of Vaughn’s involvement — he may end up turning it down — it’s difficult to digest this news in a strictly serious manner. That goes for all the other casting “announcements” as well. But so far, from all the plot details that we know and going by the casting news season two is looking very strange, and very interesting.

What we want to avoid is a situation in which actors are cast in an attempt to top what was done the season before. Casting actors outside of roles that they would normally be associated with is one way to do that, but it’s also a way to get people to look at actor in another way. With actors in talks that the majority of people would probably not have pegged for True Detective, it’s understandable to be both excited and wary.
