Is Matthew McConaughey a Lock for an Emmy?

The 2014 Emmy’s are set to take place on August 25th, and the nomination list is filled with talent in all corners. Matthew McConaughey and Woody Harrelson are both up for Best Actor in a Drama Series, amongst Bryan Cranston, Jeff Daniels, Jon Hamm, and Kevin Spacey. That’s a powerful list of respected actors from well-regarded shows.

It’s already likely that McConaughey is going to beat out Harrelson. McConaughey’s Rust has been able to enter popular culture in a way unlike Harrelson, so expect Harrelson to go home with a loss barring an upset. Which is totally fine, because Harrelson has stated that he’ll be voting for McConaughey anyway.

It’s the others actor’s that are going to cause trouble. While all have put in superb performances in their respective shows, it’s hard not to take special notice of Bryan Cranston. Still riding high on Breaking Bad’s final season, it’s hard to ignore Cranston’s searing performance. He has previously been nominated for an Emmy for Breaking Bad and won.

True Detective is coming in hot, and considering McConaughey’s career revitalizing performance, it’s safe to say that he’s a front-runner. At this point, the number one competition will most likely come from Bryan Cranston. It’s easy to say that McConaughey has a lock on in it while actually watching his performance, but looking over the nominees presents a different kind of truth and reality.
