True Detective’s Alexandra Daddario Disagrees with Misogynistic Claims

In a recent short interview on The Daily Beast, True Detective actress Alexandra Daddario who played Marty’s love interest Lisa Tragnetti, spoke about the controversy over strong female characters surround the series. Daddario was promoting her new film Burying the Ex at the Venice Film Festival. Without beating around the bush, she disagrees. Big time.

"“I feel like the story was incredibly well-written, the character’s were real to me, and I feel like the story was about these two, flawed men, and the women—especially my character and Lili Simmons’ character—were there to propel their storylines forward. The truth is that they do some bad things…It made a lot of sense to me.”"

This is originally in reference to a piece by the New Yorker that came out during the airing of the first season which claimed that True Detective had underdeveloped female characters and a misogynist tone. If you’re curious about said article, you can check it out here.

We haven’t really heard much from the actors on this subject, so it’s nice to see that Daddario has a strong decisive answer. In fact, she goes on to say that the show’s success helped further empower female actors:

"“On the other hand as well, opposite to what people are saying about misogyny, for the women on the show, it gave us a lot more power in Hollywood. Professionally, it created the opposite situation for myself. Immediately afterwards, I booked a very strong female role in San Andreas, so I do disagree—wholeheartedly.”"

Although her future success is not the issue here, it’s still nice to see her positive attitude. We’re looking at strong female detective for season two, so we’ll see where that takes us.
