one of the burning questions leading into the second season of True Detective was who would be in the main cast of the show and who would carry the lead roles. Matthew McConaughey and Woody Harrelson set the bar extraordinarily high in the first season but did they rack up enough credit for the show to be able to cast whoever it wants?

The current cast that was selected is sure testing that theory, as not every fan is tickled by who has been chosen to be on the show. Vince Vaughn is of particular dislike to the fans of the show, but should they be upset?
History suggests no, but logic suggests that one season of lucky casting is not something to base all future casting decisions on. Look, the first season was a grand slam in every way possible as the show was great, the acting was even better and that all combined to make an amazing season.
But part of the surprise was we weren’t expecting Matthew McConaughey to be as good as he was. That’s something that many fans are leaning on as a defense of the second season cast, but it’s a weak defense. The bottom line is, the show has built up casting credit but the limit isn’t has high as some are trying to say it is.
