Did True Detective Help Pave the Way for the Return of Twin Peaks?

The big news today isn’t exactly True Detective related. At least, not at first glance. Today saw the announcement that David Lynch and Mark Frost would be reviving the cult hit, Twin Peaks, at Showtime. Twin Peaks will return in 2016, 25 years about it aired on CBS. This is a big deal in its own right, but did True Detective have anything to do with this? The success of True Detective showed that people are willing to embrace a Twin Peaks-esque series, and David Lynch himself is a fan. Now just might be the perfect time to go about bringing back the real deal.

It’s no secret that True Detective owes a thing or two to Twin Peaks, and dark, long-form dramas are coming back in a big way. In fact, even though Twin Peaks made an initial splash upon its premiere, the current television climate is now more hospitable for its unique vision. The new season will air on Showtime instead of broadcast, paving the way for a more intense version that will most likely stay truer to what Lynch and Frost want.

Make no mistake: Twin Peaks and True Detective are going to be competitors vying for the same audience. There was never a scenario in which we thought that sentence could ever be written. In just a little over a year’s time, we’ll be writing about how the return of Twin Peaks has marked True Detective’s ratings. This is further indication that True Detective has some serious power.

Things are going to get very interesting.
