At the risk of sounding like one of those guys — or worse, a hipster — there may be a major problem with how mainstream True Detective is trying to be with it’s second season of the show.

It’s almost an unfair argument to make, as no matter how hard the show tried to stay out of the mainstream, the first season and the success there forced the show into the pop culture pipeline forever. But there’s a difference between embracing the mainstream success in a Nirvana kind of way and selling out hard in a KISS kind of way.
So which will the second season of True Detective be?
Fans are hoping for a Nirvana approach to the season, which will embrace the mainstream success to step the series up to a new level. But so far the pandering to A-list talent seems to suggest KISS-levels of sell out possibility. Fans are seeing this in the casting of Vince Vaughn and the hold out for A-list, well known names for the leads characters in the show.
That’s not a bad thing though as you want to see an evolution in the show, however the line is thin between using the success to your advantage and pandering to the popluarity.
The nagging question causing so much anxiety on True Detective is which will the second season be?
