Report: HBO Launching Stand-alone Streaming Service in 2015
Many thought that this day would never come, especially when HBO seemed so unconcerned with problems such as password sharing. It didn’t look like HBO would ever launch a stand-alone service, but that all changed today. HBO sent out a press release that announces a streaming service coming in 2015. Anyone currently using someone else’s password for HBO GO will now be able to pony up for the service without paying for a cable package. Or they could jus keep using that password.

The announcement of the service also signaled a decline in Netflix’s stock as reported by Variety. The two will soon be more direct competitors, after all. It will also be interesting to see if this announcement has any effect on the future availability of HBO series on Amazon’s on Instant Video Service after the two struck a deal for classic series and certain first seasons of current shows.
2015 if going to be a big year for HBO. In the release, HBO CEO Richard Plepler laid on HBO’s current plan for future world domination, which is either exciting or threatening depending on your point of view:
"“All in, there are 80 million homes that do not have HBO and we will use all means at our disposal to go after them.”"
We’ll see how it all shakes out next year.
