True Detective Season 2 Needs to Find Comedy in Darkness
By Josh Hill
The second season of the hit HBO series True Detective will eventually start production and premiere some episodes, but until then fans are going to be left wondering what sort of tone the show will be taking. The first season was largely dark and mystical but could the second season benefit from embracing some dark comedy?

Breaking Bad is one of the best shows to ever air on television, but it’s also one of the darkly comedic shows too. Even when things start getting darker and darker, the comedy is still there to break things up at the right time. These sorts of payoffs could help True Detective find a new identity in the second season that will make it separate from the first season as opposed to feeling derivative.
That’s going to be key in this second season, as the show needs to find new footing to stand on. That’s where the show can lean on the dark comedy that Breaking Bad so perfectly captured. There are laugh out loud moments in True Detective, but not as much as Breaking Bad, which is part of why that show is so remembered.
True Detective doesn’t need to totally become a comedic series, but leaning on dark comedic elements that will almost certainly be present could help establish a fresh taste for the series.
