Will True Detective Take Boardwalk Empire’s Time slot?

It’s official: Boardwalk Empire has ended. HBO’s gangster successor to The Sopranos is over after five seasons, and though we could lament and begin analyzing there series as a whole, it would perhaps be more prudent to look to the future. HBO officially has an empty time-slot now, and it’s a big one. 9:00 PM EST on HBO has been something of a prized possession for some time, and it would show that HBO is truly serious about True Detective if it took it over.

More from HBO

HBO has other prize fighters in the ring, however, and it could always go to The Leftovers. But True Detective has a certain mass-appeal — even if it remains a niche genre show — that The Leftovers has yet to gain. HBO said goodnight to one of its heavy hitters tonight, even if critical reception became mixed as it got closer to the end. Now is the time to go to bat with True Detective.

We can’t yet even say for certain when season two of True Detective will air, and we have at least one actor that’s not even sure of his own involvement. Things have a long way to progress before True Detective can take over Boardwalk Empire’s spot, but it doesn’t hurt to think ahead.

Did you watch Boardwalk Empire’s finale? Do you think True Detective can be HBO’s next great crime series?
