Even though this mystery has been enough to maintain the fans so far, it will be all up to the writing and acting once things get going. And if season two doesn’t hit the mark, you can expect the hype to die down just in time for season three. The guessing game of “who will be in True Detective this time?” can only sustain viewers for so long. At some point it becomes routine, and even more so if there is a dip in quality.
True Detective may not be the biggest show on television, but it is currently one of the most talked about. Everyone has their eye on what’s going to happen next, which has so far been propelled by the successes of the first season. It’s rare for American television to feature a series with a sole writer. It brings a monumental amount of pressure, and saying that the successes and failures of True Detective lie on the shoulders of show-runner Nic Pizzolatto is not a farfetched statement.
Whatever happens, we’ll be watching.
