AMC’s The Night Manager to Take on True Detective
Television has been creeping up on film for some time now; series are more involved and better written, and film stars are taking television roles more frequently. Cue Thor actor Tom Hiddleston, whom Hollywood Reporter is reporting (ahem) will be taking the lead in The Night Manager. This news apparently follows a fierce multi-network bidding war, but after all is said and done AMC looks to have won out.
The Night Manager is a dark detective thriller involving under covering operations and international crimes and based on a novel of the same name by John le Carre. On paper it seems to be a larger tale than True Detective, which has so far dealt with local crime. Make no mistake, however, this is an obvious play against True Detective.

True Detective is helping to revive the detective genre in a big way, and its likely due to its success that The Night Manager is able to move forward. AMC has been very lucky with its own series so far, playing host to The Walking Dead, Fargo and Mad Men.
In fact, it’s possible that AMC is one of the best networks to host a True Detective competitor due to its past success with drama and having more wiggle room than a broadcast network. Not that it really matters so much anymore.
If True Detective is at least partially responsible for bringing more good TV our way, than we’re all for it.
