Have the True Detective Spoofs Peaked?

True Detective’s impact on popular culture has continued long after the first season aired. That’s a really good thing. It means that True Detectve has wormed its way into the cultural zeitgeist, and even though True Detective’s ratings were practically nothing compared to those of The Walking Dead, making a True Detective spoof is not something that’s just going to appeal to a niche audience.

In fact, when you spoof True Detective, you are appealing to that same audience. It’s expected now for people to just get the joke. After all, The Soup won an Emmy for its own True Detective spoof. The spoofs themselves, however, usually come in one of two flavors: Rust Cohle, or audition involving Rust Cohle. There have been some exceptions, but that’s it for the most part.

That’s not to say that we’ve grown tired of them; we encourage them to continue! But with most have such a singular focus, is there really anywhere else to go from here? When season two rolls around, will we see the same high quality spoofs? It’s better for all involved to think of the first season as lightning in the bottle.

It’s been difficult so far to let the memory of Rust and Marty go. Hopefully when the second season starts it will become easier. Whether or not we see a plentiful amount of spoofs from the second season is not maker of quality, but it would mean that it had a similar impact as the first.

All we can do is wait and see what happens.
